PBA bowlers
« on: March 14, 2011, 01:47:01 PM »
Does anyone know if there is anyone on tour throwing with no grips?

I guess I want to know if its still possible to bowl on Sport Shots with no grips.

I dont see how using grips vs not using grips would effect being able to bowl on a sport shot.

I always heard whatever was most comfortable to the bowler was best. If you have never used grips before, and it feels "right," then keep everything the same. Sport shots aren't about needing a ton of revs, but hitting your mark with consistency. Sometimes you need to put some more hand in the ball, sometimes you need to flatten out. You need to be consistent with your release. If you think grips are the answer, then put them in. If you don't think you need them, stay with what works.

Norm Duke doesn't use them. His explanation on his instructional DVD was 'because I'm a pro'. He looks at grips as a comfort item (not to say they wont help you rev the ball more).

If you squeeze without grips, you're going to feel it. Not a pleasant feeling either.

I think this would improve a bowlers average on a sport shot, since squeezing is bad. I would think that any bowler that has problems grabbing the ball at the bottom would be able to break that by using a ball without finger grips.

Many pros feel or think that whatever they do is correct and they tend to defend it. Norm saying he doesn't use grips because he is a pro is a very arrogant, egotistical, non-educated statement. There are more pros using grips than not. Grips are similar to wrist supports, they are made due to the fact that not everyone is the same...what works for one does not work for another...it is a feel thing and what you are comfortable with...plain & simple. Nothing professional about it either way.

For what it's worth, the full statement on Duke's "I don't use grip because I'm a pro" thing: he said he doesn't use grips because he's more concerned with the feel and touch in his release and less with comfort. League bowlers generally don't need to worry as much about that much nuance in the release and should absolutely do whatever is most comfortable. Norm feels like comfort is secondary to ball reaction for him since he's bowling for his career and a lot of money. (Remember, this is a guy who intentionally doesn't even bevel his fingerholes so it physically hurts him if he grips it hard!)

For the record, I personally have never tried no grips because it seems like it wouldn't work well for someone like me whose fingers are constantly swelling and shrinking. I actually switched to Vacu-Grips because of that issue, and love them.

from someone who went from using grips to no-grips.....

I can instantly tell when i grab it or hit it too much at the bottom....  as for feel i like going without grips alot better.... i dont have to worry about burning fingers from the friction, or tearing of my skin...

Plus my fingers dont swell up as much when i go from bowling a couple games and then have a break, and bowl a couple more....

I do leave my finger hole very sharp, it took a bit to get usta it, but i like the feel of it......
And !!!!!  I dont have to replace the grips every year either.......

Brian Voss and Amleto Monacelli don't use them either.........many "old school" players don't use them.

Stevie Weber and Mika Koivuinemi also do not use grips. As far as grips vs. no grips go, it is all a feel issue. I personally do not use grips. Whether you use grips or not, it doesn't matter whether you bowl on a sport shot or a house shot. For me I can feel the ball a lot more on my hand without grips. But once again it is all a feel issue. Barnes, Weber, Walter, and Bill Oniell all use grips. So go with what you like to use.

Mika uses grips, you are wrong about that one.  Mika's TOC winning Mission Domination.

Like I said it is a feel issue. I am not wrong about Mika not using grips, because he didn't use them when he was with Brunswick. He must have went back to grips. Some players jump back and forth.

It's silly to say that one is better than the other....it's preference...just like Ric said.

Using grips:

Tommy Jones

PDW

Mike Fagan

Chris Barnes

Walter Ray

Bill O'Neill

NOT Using Grips:

Brian Voss

Norm Duke

Parker Bohn III

Sean Rash

This is just off of the top of my head....but it proves one thing....it doesn't matter.  There are players on both lists that are at the top of the world rankings.  It's all in what feel you want.

Mika did have Brunswick balls with grips. He used the smaller type Turbo ones though. Found this out from an old Vapor Zone of his that I have.
