Title: April Fool
Post by: Spider Man on April 01, 2007, 03:47:21 PM
Did Reyes let fly an F-bomb at the end of his first match? If so it was censored on a delay. It's bad enough when people don't like to bring kids to the alleys b/c of the swearing and antics of a few bad apples, but the pro's have to know stuff like this isn't good for a struggling sport's image.

I think the great slump of 2006-2007 is finally coming to an end!!

Well, I'm not sure he "said it" - but he definitely did mouth the words.

I was pretty stunned. I believe it was Randy who said right after that that "we don't usually see Tony like THIS"... Other than that, nothing said.

However in response to

Are things like DUIs, drug arrests, etc, good for "established" sports? Or are "established sports" immune to troubles?

Come on people...I'm sure there have been plenty of other bowlers dropping a bomb of some sort on TV...lay off.

Oh yeah, that's right.  The crowd always got more silent when Earl Weaver, Billy Martin, Lou Piniella was arguing with an umpire while using G-rated language.  And arguments and manager meltdowns are almost never shown and celebrated by giggling hosts on SportsCenter.

[sarcasm off]

Get off it and watch a sporting event once in a while.  Check out a hockey game and watch players mouth off to each other from bench to bench.  Football players on the sidelines (other than TO, too!!) aren't exactly Captain Kangaroo material.  It's the intensity of competition that necessitates an outlet like that.  Plus, I'm not entirely sold on the audibility of the "bomb".

baccala8872,

I have had season tickets for hockey. And I played football in school like most everyone else. The bottom line isn't what we think, it's what major sponsors think.

Spider,

I totally understand where you are coming from.  However, I don't think that a half-censored "bomb" is going to lead a sponsor to pull out.  Maybe the sport'll get more attention if it is a bit "edgier".  We can all agree that the current image isn't bringing in viewers like gangbusters.  Maybe, as much as I'd hate to say it, the PBA needs more PDW's and TJ's and less "gentlemen".

Remember, I don't necessarily agree with the principle, but it may work to bring in ratings/sponsors/viewership.  If we are honest, we know that "edgy" sells.

Just a thought.

I would say more PDW's... I like watching TJ bowl but sometimes I admit he can get really repetitive with the "that's right! come on's" and can get rather annoying. At least PDW can mix it up with a crotch chop, a staredown, middle finger or some other emotion.
