Awesome quote from local bowler...
« on: February 24, 2010, 01:42:15 AM »
The guy that made this comment has bowled some regionals...with no success.  He averages about 210 in league and really thinks he's one new ball away from the tour.

He was talking yesterday about the US Open and he said "man I should have bowled that...it's taking barely a 200 average to cash".  Someone responded with the fact that it's the US Open and really tough for a reason.  He made a comment that guys were average 165 and that if they couldn't do that they should just shoot themselves.

What's amazing is this guy is going to be getting a pro shop soon...and has actually bowled regionals...he's a "professional bowler".

Russ, great post, love it.    I had a good quote also, a higher rev player, young guy, was thinking out loud during league.  He said, "I can't believe I don't have a 300 yet."  i asked him, "how long have you been bowling?"  He said, "I started bowling over the summer."

Gigantic pet peeve of mine was when people would say "I finally got my 300 or 800"...as if it's some sort of entitlement.  There is a machine that you can go buy a 300 at...and they finally rounded up enough change to go get one.

I practice on Monday afternoons and the lane man always puts out a sport pattern for me without telling me what it is.

The week after Kulick beat Barnes some randomn guy wanted to bowl me for $20 a game. The best part was it took him losing 5 games out of 5 to get the point.

Yeah, I always give people that I bowl with crap when they get the best new ball on the market and don't bowl 300 out of the box with it.

nice job moto, 5 out of 5?   I try to explain to non pba shot bowlers how narrow the margin of error is.  The truth is: most bowlers "think" they are accurate.

The funny thing is that after the 5th game we jumped over to a fresh pair of lanes and I worked with the guy for about 2 hours. I felt bad for taking his money, but I figured since he got the point he should at least get a "real" lesson out of it. I can say one thing for him, he paid every penny.

The pattern was Chameleon.

They laid out the U.S. Open pattern for the last two weeks of my summer PBA Experience league.  Man, that shot was really, really hard.  After 2 games of scoring horrible, I basically gave up and started throwing a cannonball at the headpin and hoped for the best.

Anybody that can average 200 on that mess is doing well.

Well, to be perfectly honest a major problem with bowling sport leagues is most people don't know how to properly break down the pattern so instead of breaking the pattern down and then scoring well, most people just make things worse. Also, most sport leagues are only 3 games, basically robbing you of the entire sport shot experience that you get on a real 5-7-10 game set jumping a pair after every game.

This is why I will never go with my best friends to Nationals.

There's a big difference in the person who starts bowling and has revs and the newest stuff, etc and after 6 months or so is saying this when compared to the person bowling a couple if not more years, 2-3 leagues, practices....perhaps takes lessons, etc and has come close many time with 279s, 289s, and 290 pluses.  Big difference.

I am with you on this one.  My PBAx league was a LOT harder than the regional I did last summer.  Once people gang up on a pattern and open it up a bit, game 5 is a lot easier to shoot 200+ than when there are 5 games of people throwing the ball wherever they want making the patterns look like giant cloverleaves.

The thing that gets under my skin is the fact that I've bowled with the same guys since I was 14 years old (28 now), and they always come to me for advice and coaching. Yet, when we bowl a hard pattern they won't ever work as a team on the pattern. I can see the first few weeks because they want to figure things out, but by week 3 if what you are doing isn't working it'd be nice if they'd start listening. Which is again, why I won't go to Nationals with them. Well, unless it's in Vegas.

Russell and company...

After reading this thread I had to chim in about what a "league" bowler said to me a week ago after our league.

the oversite to him is basic cranker with a bad release, if you could call it that, and averages about 200.

So after said night and seeing him struggle and talking with a few of my teammates, i overheard him say something about the lane condition.   So i said "whats wrong with the lane condition?" ( its second shift )   And his reply was "well, the shots always different week to week.."   this week his ball was hooking very early..   I said well I can help you get your ball down the lane a bit farther.  And after saying something about extending his arm at the end of his release.. His response was, well when i do that, the ball just goes straight...

So we went back to talking about the lanes, and I said seriously whats wrong with the lanes... And he said again the shot is always different.  And i replyed with " well a "good" bowler should want that "  and he gives me some grumbling about how he doesnt mind a different oil pattern or amounts of oil as long as the "shot" is the same..

And continues on about another bowling alley he has bowled at before, and said, well i can go in there monday - sunday and the shot is always the same.. doesnt matter if it's heavy oil or light oil, the shot is the same, and I always know where to play..   I come back with " yea and thats why you have House hacks averaging 230+, and when they go someplace else, they struggle to hit 200"

So this past weekend, they had the first week of the city tournament, and the "GM" changed up the shot a bit lol.... And i see said guy totally stuggling and I dont think he broke 500, for any of the 3 sets he bowled.

I guess it just makes me laugh a bit, cuz I can tell the guy wants to bowl better but doesnt want to really have to work at it.
