Bakes Ball Speed???
« on: December 11, 2005, 06:08:34 AM »
OK for those in the know.  What is Tom Baker's ball speed?

Yes, I know he is somewhat of a spinner.  He proves you don't have to have mega ball speed like everyone says you need to stay competitive.

Being a spinner is exactly why he can get away with rolling the ball as slow as he does.  From what I remember watching him here last year, his ball speed is in the 16mph neighborhood.  That is not exact, but like you said, he is proof you don't have to be a fire baller to score.  I am a true believe that speed is not the name of the game.  Accuracy reigns supreme.

P.S.:  I know a guy here in Atlanta that has 14 mph ball speed and averages 225+ and he is in his late 50s.

Steve--I wouldn't even call Tom Baker a spinner with a PAP of 4 11/16 over and 15/16 up.  To me a spinner would have a much lower track than that.

I'd just like to hear what his ball speed is to compare to what most league type roll.  I don't see any big difference.

Really?  16mph??  I thought that "average" ball speed is supposed to be 17mph, with the median of league bowlers probably throwing it 15-16.  Kind of odd, with all the talk I thought he'd be throwing it 15mph.

scott,

I agree with you totally.  Was not aware his PAP was over 4 5/8.  Watching his ball go down the lane, he seems to have more tilt than that.  Granted I do not do a whole lot of research, which is a huge downfall of mine, but watching him today on some closer up shots of his ball going down the lane, he seemed to have some tilt on the ball.  I would have thought he would be around or less than 4 1/2 PAP.  Thank you for the correction.  Also, goes to show you that with the right layout on the ball, you can get away with slower ball speed as well.

guys,

I would agree with all of you.  At the pins, yes I would say he is around the 14 mph range.  At his release, I would say 16.  As far as average ball speed, bowler to bowler, I agree totally with 16-17 mph "at the pins".  Scott originally did not specify whether at the pins or just in general.  If you meant, "at the pins" with resin equipmentfor Baker, you are looking at 14 mph, but with plastic, you are looking at around 16-17.  I am sorry for not being more specific earlier myself.

Ah, okay it makes sense now.  I was confused since my ball speed is between 16-17 at the pins and I was thinking "Wow, do I really throw it as slow as him?"

Hey, everyone,

From my own experiences with CATS, I know and understand that with ball speed, it comes from whether the ball is creating friction on the lane surface.  The more aggressive the ball, the more the ball slows down going towards the pins (19mph off the hand, 16mph at the pins).  The less agressive the ball, such as plastic, the more it hydroplanes, thus not slowing down (19mph off the hand, 19mph at the pins).  I explain this to many bowlers at the center I work at because they do not understand why they seea HUGE descrepancy in ball speed from one shot to another.  They think it is something they are doing wrong, but all it is is the type of ball you are using and the amount of oil you are bowling on.  Think of bowling balls like tires on a car.  You can have $200 high performance tires on your car.  On dry pavement, superb traction and handling, especially when braking.  HOWEVER....put a light coat of ice on the same pavement using same vehicle with same tires.  Now apply the brakes.  You do nothing but hydroplane and slide so obviously you are not slowing down.  Same concept.

Today if you watched Mika and PA were throwing considerably faster, Scroggs still very fast....Bakes was turtle speed compared to them.  He was also circling it covering more boards...add that to the equation.
