PBA "Double Jump" Lane Courtesy
« on: February 19, 2013, 01:14:20 PM »
Does anyone here have a simple and clear explanation for the "double jump" lane courtesy the PBA employs? I find it difficult to explain to friends and sometimes I even confuse myself trying to explain the process. Just looking for the simplest explanation here so everyone can understand, bowler and non-bowler.

The easiest way to describe it--Once somebody bowls on your pair, nobody can bowl on that pair again until somebody bowls on each pair beside of you.  Think of it in 'pairs' and not lanes.  Works really well if you have 4 to a pair, but when you only have 3--it's a little tricky.  Hope this helps.

From the 2010 PBA Rulebook -
Quote
17.4 Lane Courtesy and Double Jumping. Competitors must observe one (1) pair lane courtesy at all times. Competitors may not "Double Jump." Double jumping occurs following a delivery when a competitor on the same pair delivers his or her ball before one (1) competitor from the pair to the right and one (1) competitor from the pair to the left have made a delivery, unless those competitors are not ready to bowl or they give way.

I think BowlinStr8t nailed it. Once someone on your pair bowls, you're supposed to let someone on the left and someone on the right go before someone on your pair bowls again. It sets a nice pace for play. Just be careful. There are some PBA members who love to give non-members and/or newbies a hard time. I saw a guy jump all over an amateur for supposedly double-jumping him. The funniest part was that the am. didn't double-jump him at all. The guy who threw the shot was just mad that he threw a bad shot at a bad time!

What a good way to grow the sport.

What were the rules in regards to lane courtesy for this tournament?

Nothing was on the rules sheet. So I give typical 1 lane.

Do you REALLY need 2 lanes to spray and pray on a house shot.

No, you don't.  But if the rules say to give x amount of courtesy (apparently not in this case) then it's just less of a headache to just follow them.

Not going to disagree with that.

It wasn't a bunch of people it was really just one person. Every time he got up to bowl and if somebody else got up within a pair he would back off. We proceeded to refer to him as "PBA"

I also like when in a typical 5 man handicap league the guy 2 lanes down gives you that "look" when you step up on your lane.  One lane courtesy in handicap league in the norm unless someone is stepping up in the 10th for a 3.  Even in the USBC tourney they stress one lane and have stewards to keep the pace moving.  I know this is off topic but was just going with the flow.

I have never had an issue in any of my leagues. 1 lane in all the leagues I bowl in is all anybody looks for.

If somebody is shooting 300 EVERYBODY stops bowling lol.
