Title: Belmonte is given 2 excemptions
Post by: mmcfarland300 on November 25, 2008, 01:12:33 AM
Is it fair that Jason Belmonte will be given back to back excemptions over the next weeks on the PBA tour?  Should he be required to bowl the TQR like all the other Non Exempt guys?

I think they should all have to bowl qualifiers.  The whole exempt tour is the core of the PBA's downfall as a sport.

Agreed qualifying should be brought back to bring in more fresh blood, also older PBA guys would probably come out more like the old days.

Also stepladders with the ladies being sent packing would be nice, they can run there own show again as specials maybe 5-8 times a year.

On topic Belmonte is a poster boy for bowling, squeaky clean image and charm so they all love him. Seems like a nice guy and that is one of the reasons plus he can more interest internationally for the PBA.

They have given exemptions before and evidently they think Jason is good for the game

I am an adv octe for bringing qualifying back but they made an attempt to be more like golf. golf gives special exemptions so they will also. I thought they would be done by who sponsors thee tourney though not the pba. one or 2 maybe. I would still like to see qualifying come back though it may be worth the while for more amatuers to bowl pba tourneys then.

Duh, Is it fair?? In case you haven't noticed most people don't care about PBA Bowling so yes it is fair. The PBA needs Belmonte to make a show in the worst way so people that don't watch take notice.

Yes, tony is right, the PBA needs Belmonte to make a show.  They need the buzz from the 2 handed Belmonte.  But is it fair?  no, he should bowl the TQR just like Ronnie Russell, and Brian LeClair, and Chris Collins, and so on.

I think one commissioner's exemption is fair, as he is a top international player, but two isn't fair to the rest of the guys out there. He is definitely one of the "golden children" of the PBA, and they will do as they wish.

No other commisioner's exemptions have been granted this year.

Just because the buzz is needed doesn't make it fair.  I enjoy watching Belmonte bowl, but think that 2 excemptions is unecessary.

I think it's pretty much a gaurantee to get him rookie of the year honors.  Pretty messed up to the 1st year guys griding out TQRs all season.  Even if Belmo were to finish 64th both tournaments, which won't happen, that still puts him ahead of other rookies who don't make it out of the TQR.  He's got the skills to pay the bills on tour but fair is fair, and just to garner a little bit more buzz from a few diehard followers of world bowling on the internet by giving him 2 weeks of a bye to the 14 game qualifying is not fair.

Never thought of the "Rookie of the Year" angle. Makes sense. Good call.

Well DP3, he wouldn't be ahead of Jon VanHees in the Rookie of the Year rankings so they may need to give him a few more exemptions to get there.
The PBA is doing everything in their power this year to creat buzz and bring the interest back.  If Belmonte can make a show that will certainly help.  The only part that sucks about it, is the fact that it does take away that extra spot from the TQR, which sucks for the guys trying to make it.

What they need is for Belmo to have a full exemption for next year, so he comes out and bowls every week.

And watch the qualifying field shrink quicker than George Constanza after coming of the pool.

PBA Rules and Regulations

7.3.6

Commissioner's Exemption. A weekly PBA TQR exemption may be withheld
at the discretion of the Commissioner and will be announced no later than two
(2) weeks prior to the start date of the event.

The PBA makes rules and does not follow them...will they be fined?

They can give exemptions to whoever they want but it seems like they just really want to get a two hander on the show because it is trendy right now.

I am going to grow a third arm so I can bowl with all three and eventually get a hot PBA exemption.

I think it's a joke. He should have to earn it like everyone else.

Two handed bowling only generates a buzz to bowlers. There are no young basketball players out there that will leave the court to watch Jason on TV. If the PBA wants bowling to succeed it needs to do what it can to promote credibility in the sport.

I think bowling needs to be an Olympic sport to gain some outside interest from people that never see it. I also think the PBA needs its stars to do training seminars instead of or along with the Pro Ams to advance the sport.

The USBC needs to do alot more to save this sport but PBA can definitely help.

if the pba "needs" belmo to make a telecast then belmo needs to make the telecast like every other player does----- bowl well enough in the tqr.

Is it fair?  No!  He should compete just like the other guys!  If he's good enough that week he will make it into the tourney!

why not just seed him #1 at the US Open.  This is what you call a last ditch marketing effort. :-(

You've got a point . .  I think it's nice that the guys who get the points and win tournaments are safe to get paid every week the following year, but they've made it so much more difficult to get experience or have a chance.  The TQR is kind of a joke, the top ten guys average 240+ every week it seems like, and then get into the tournament and suck.  I just know that I would be more inclined to bowl a tournament if I didn't have to bowl the TQR, if I could have a shot at making the top 64 right off the bat.

you all seem to forget that Tom Clark has the world's biggest hard-on for Belmonte...so now that he has some say in the PBA...it was just a matter of time...
