This is a re-post from the Misc. forum...but if you haven't seen this, keep reading!
Alright, guys, here goes:
As I work for BJI, I'm trying to put together a list of the 50 greatest bowlers to NEVER BOWL OR WIN in the PBA. This in response to the PBA putting together a list of the 50 greatest PBA players...
So...what I guess I'm asking you guys to do is just start naming some guys. I've got the obvious ones -- Jimmy Smith, Jimmy Blouin, John "Count" Gengler, Hank Marino, Ned Day -- but I want to hear what you guys think. I know a ton about the pre-PBA years...but not so much about those bowlers who rolled outside the PBA while the PBA was in existence. That means a lot of folks -- the action bowlers, the amateurs, etc. -- might go unnoticed, and I don't want that to happen. I want this list to be as complete as possible, so the more you got, the better it'll be. ON SECOND EDIT: Note that the list has been expanded to include those who never won a title. You can now suggest pros, amateurs, anyone...before the PBA, during the PBA but no longer bowling, current players...etc.
After I compile all the names (from here, from my own research, from talking to other experts, etc.), BJI is going to rank these, just like the PBA is doing. Haven't exactly established how this will happen, but it'll most likely be a panel of experts.
Sound good? Start naming! ON EDIT: If you want, when you post a name, add a little info (where they're from, why they should be on the list) about that bowler. Researching names takes a lot of time...and by providing info, those bowlers you name will have a better chance of making the list!

ken simard lol made 1 show but he will win one eventually
--------------------
-
forgetting Bill Oneill, it wont be long before he wins one but a must on a list as such. Great game he has, every veteran on tour would agree.
-
Jack Winters Sr., is one of the biggest names in east coast. He was once called record breaking Jack for breaking 7 world records in one weekend. He lived in Bucks County pennsyvlania where also Bill O'Neill and Vince Mazzanti Jr. are from. Research this guy a little and he will have a guaranteed spot on that list.
-
An Aussie of eras past called Chris Batson would have been very competitive on the tour given the chance

Time for some REAL bowling!!!

gotta add dave guindon and mike neumann to the list

Alas, the doubles title eliminates them. I know -- it's frustrating.

MATT OGRADY hes just like god of bowling hes going to make it big when or if he goes on tour

Matt O'Grady is in his 20s, hes not even close to being one of the best of all time to never win on the PBA Tour lol.
The kid is an amazing talent though, don't get me wrong, I wish I was that good.

Steve Kloempken(sp?)- multiple Eagle Holder, three time collegite bowler of the year, team usa...

THE Greatest Bowler to never have one an official PBA title, and quite likely The Greatest Bowler of all time, is the one that people think of only as the greatest trick shot artist of all time: Andy Varipapa.
As a young man, no one was able to dominate the game like Andy. Here's a glimpse of how good he was as he aged:
"In 1946, at the age of 55 he won the prestigious All-Star competition in a grueling 100 game format, making him the oldest winner ever.
He became the first to win two years in a row when he repeated in 1947 in spite of a dramatic comeback by Joe Wilman.
Mr. Varipapa lived to be 93 years old and was an active bowler well into old age.
At the age of 78, he taught himself to bowl left-handed, as his right hand was giving him difficulties and within two years he averaged 180, a testament to his awesome skills and longevity."
Legendary.

I didn't realize that I just thought she never won on the PBA. The PWBA was a different entity I think.

One bowler that comes to mind is Paul Fleming. I don't think he ever won a tour title and he was a great bowler

Another contemporary bowler, and as much a power player as anyone ever, Kelly Coffman.

Didnt Varipapa. "the clown prince of bowling" win the U.S. Open? I may be wrong but I believe he did win a PBA title.
He won it won it 2 years in a row, finished 2nd on his last try, before the PBA came into existence (its inception was in 1958).
And that was back when it was a grueling 100 game event, and he was already in his mid-fifties (the format was later modified and the event would become the US Open, still to this day the hardest event out there, but even more so back then).

Andy Veripapa is now a 2 time Major winner on the Denny's PBA Tour, although he is not a PBA Tour Titleist. Should that effect the list?
-
Ahh, well, it makes things more difficult, but we'll work around it. Right now, we might limit it to bowlers who would have or could have or will have a chance to win a PBA event (i.e., those bowlers since 1959). I might make a sidebar list for pre-PBA players, too.

I would like to mention Todd Thompson. He still bowls some locally here in Reno,Nv. He did make a PBA telecast in the mid 80's,finishing second to Brian Voss in the AC-Delco Classic I believe. He has also bowled 300 and 299 at ABC/USBC Nationals in recent years.
-
Bill Lillard Sr and JR
Sr still ave around 200 and Jr 220 just bowling one league a week. He could have won a tile but quit bowling for years. Don't know exactly why but just got tired of the way bowling was being run.

I have to give my vote to Tim Mack. Has won everything under the sun in the amateur ranks, all over the globe. And now is coming back from a career threatening shoulder injury.
On a side note: I bowled with Tim in college at Penn State, he was incredible back then even. And it was none other then Smack himself who gave yours truly the nickname that adorns my screenname.

i would have to rate world amateur champion bill hoffman better than fero williams. tim mack would have had a better chance to win a pba title years ago.
-
Just a thought, but shouldnt this topic include women such as Lynda Barnes or Liz Johnson aswell?
-
How does David O'Sullivan or my Buddy OG get on this list. This should go to guys who have been chasing the tour for years and just havent got the break or the elite amateurs of our era like Mack or Belmonte.
