Anyone tried the new PBA patterns
« on: October 24, 2013, 02:48:24 PM »
Hi,

Just saw that the patterns have changed alot.

Cheetah is still 35ft, Viper is 39ft, Chameleon is 43ft and Scorpion is now 47ft

if Scorpion is now 47 ft, will it still have the same volume?

What was their reasoning in changing the length of just those 2 patterns?

All but Cheetah is changed. Viper was 37 and is now 39, Chameleon was 39 and is now 43 and Scorpion was 41 and is now 47.
My guess would be the stronger equipment of today, so you need the extra length and volume.

Thanks for the info,  my local house is kind enough to put the pba patterns out for practice for non-league bowlers.  My favorite pattern is the Chameleon, but my ball just skated (from where I'm used to playing it).  But now that I know it's an extra four feet, everything makes sense.

I've bowled on the newer animal patterns:  wolf, plays a lot like on tv, just make sure you use a ball that doesn't burn up to much or throw hard.  I also bowled on the badger at 52 ft,  I know the pros play it from deep inside, but my ball (300 rev rate) would just go straight, I played it from the outside just pointing it in.  Only pattern I would consider bringing sanded stuff to try and break down the shot.

If you're only going to bowl in a couple of different venues a year you gotta change something.

When there was 30 tournaments a year and your ball didn't roll good at a particular center you could schedule that week off.  Now if you want to be a professional bowler you better make sure your ball rolls good at South Pointe.

From what I understand, they are different lengths, volumes and shapes have been changed slightly as well. This will be the first time for them to see these patterns. Maybe it will help keep the scores a little lower this year. We shall see.

The change was mostly made due to topography at Southpointe.  That place flat out hooks in the track area and turns into a stand left throw right fest on most any pattern.  They are trying to make the patterns play different.
