Who is Chris Collins?
« on: June 05, 2005, 12:48:26 PM »
First I'd like to say that I'm a new member to the website. I've been looking at this website ever since I've started bowling which was about 4 years ago. Anyways, I've been keeping up with Tour Trials like many other people on this site. I know most of the people in the top ten pretty well except for Chris Collins. Who is he? Is his temper really that bad?

Thanks for replying.

He's a southern region champion.  Throws it really good, loose backswing with a nice strong roll.  He does get pretty mad, supposedly his temper is better than it used to be.  I saw him at a regional and he was at the top of the board and after a couple bad shots he completely changed attitudes.  If he makes a show this year it will be on everyone's mind you can bet that.

He came to my local bowling center about a month ago for regionals. This was the first time I've ever watched him. He is a great bowler, but he was slamming, kicking and hitting everything that wouldnt hit back. It was ridiculous. I just stood back and laughed. I asked several people if he was always like that and they said a year or two prior, he threw a bowling ball threw the glass door on his way out. I can understand people getting angry at bad breaks and bad shots, but you have to keep your temper somewhat under control. He just looked like a 5 year old kid throwing a temper tantrum. His twin brother Chip Collins also bowls, but he keeps his anger under control. If Chris makes a TV show this year, it will be interesting to see how it goes.

I crossed a few pairs away from Chris in Little Rock, AR this year.  He started to blow up, pounded a chair, cussing....  Tournament Director was watching him pretty close.  He didn't do too bad this year....

He has a pretty nice physical game, pretty smooth.  But man, he has to get his helmet under control, the exempt players are gonna beat him up, and they won't put up with his meltdowns either.....

Chris is a pretty good guy for the most part.  He is a pain in the arse to bowl on a squad with because he will occasionally raise his voice and hit things.  Once you get him off the lanes out of competition, though, he's not a bad guy to be around.

In my last regional during the practice session, Chris and his brother came down to bowl on the pair next to me.  I stepped up on the approach and threw a pretty, clean shot the put 10 in the pit; I was playing around 22 or so at the time.  Chris stepped over to my pair.  I wasn't really looking up - you know, just mentally working out possible ball/shot combinations - when I realized that someone was standing in front of me.  I looked up and Chris was about 8 inches away from my face looking right into my eyes.  Chip was standing right behind him looking over his shoulder.

Chris, with all seriousness says, "You can't do that."

Thinking I had violated some minor rule I replied, "What's that?"

He pointed back at the lane I had just struck on and said, "That.  You're not allowed to play that part of the lane.  Lefties are supposed to play out at 5."

I raised my hands as if to say 'whoa' and replied, "Hey.  I didn't get the memo."

He laughed and walked back over to his pair, shaking his head in sarcastic disbelief as he told Chip, "A lefty that moves his feet..."

We ended up talking for a bit during the tournament.  He was on A squad; I was on B, so I was able to watch him for the last few games of qualifying.  My opinion of him ended up changing a bit that day; admittedly I was of the mind that he was just a spoiled brat, but he's no better or worse temper-wise than I have been during my career.  Not to mention he's a pretty friendly, decent guy.

Congrats to him for making it at tour trials.

I got to see him at the Birmingham stop this year. He is a very solid player but like has already been stated he does have a temper. Watched him throw a few balls into his bags and kicking a few other things. Not unlike other people on the tour.

Thanks to all of you who have replied so far. I have nothing against the guy myself, I was just curious. By the way, I'm assuming that most of you who have replied so far are south regional bowlers right? Will you be coming to Fayetteville at the end of July to bowl the regional there?

Third head from the right in the picture on PBA.com.  He's the blond in the back row, black shirt.

Heck he can join a number of the exempts who have the same issues but the PBA doesn't publicize it that much.

Meltdowns I've seen.

Barnes kicking his two ball totes and bouncing the balls off of the tile floor after losing a head-to head which would have got him to the show.

Couch throwing a fully loaded 2 ball tote skipping into the wall.

Jess Stayrook - total blow-up, fingers pointing, head red like a cherry, cursing throwing and kicking balls all over the setee area. (Way to funny to watch)

Many many more which don't come to the front of the memory bank. I am sure this kid will melt down somewhat next year but hopefully keep his head in it enough to tread water as a rookie.

He won't be the first pro on tour wih the same crappy meltdown attitude. I have seen Eugene McCune at the Dallas Open 2 years ago do the same tnatrum thing in qualifying. However, he carried it over after he was done bowling. He cussed like a sailor evewn in front of the kids there to see their idols. I just sat back amazed at how someone could be such an arse. I lost all respect for him that day even though I never really knew him anyway. Hopefully, other veterans on the tour will mentor Mr. Collins and help develop his mental game. I think Norm would be a great mentor for him.

Every Pro athlete has a meltdown now and then, did you see what DLowe of the Dodgers did to that chair last week. But I think that should always take place in the paddock room and that what happens in there should stay in there. Let them do there venting in there and then come out to see the kids.
