Anyone feel this way about Mika's game?
« on: March 08, 2009, 10:52:59 AM »
The last few times he's been on TV when he hasn't won, I think it's typically because he has trouble when the lanes start to break down.

He throws it really firm and isn't what I'd call a high-rev guy, and apparently he likes to play the middle of the lane as his "A-adjustment" in such situations, but he's left a lot of corners and washouts doing this.

I wonder why he doesn't switch to something tamer and play a more direct line?

I've always had a soft spot for Mike because, like he does, I loft the p*ss out the ball a lot of the time, and for the same reasons he says he does (I grew up bowling in a bowling center where the heads were the last place you wanted to roll a ball). But I can't play the middle, either, when the heads go away because I don't have enough hand to do it effectively, and/or not enough practice time to develop a good game build around that move.

I think what's "missing" from his game is a weak equipment/direct-line game. The only time I've ever seen him play outside is when there's a flood. Thoughts?

Jess

I bowled with Mika in 2004 I believe at the US Open and he had a soft down and in shot using the Money.  It was so fluid it was great to watch.  Lofting the ball as I had seen him recently isn't how I remembered him back then.

I agree, he hasn't won anything since signing with Brunswick. Neither has anyone else lately.

Hasn't won anything? Go back and check the stats. Admittedly he is slumping right now but he has won with Brunswick.

i don't think it has anything to do with ball choice. he lofts the heads with a lower rev rate. that is the reason i leave way too many ten pins and i believe that was his problem as well (and mike's to a lesser extent). mika needs to know when to roll the ball sooner. chris barnes set it down smooth. not to take away from mika's ability as he is still a greater bowler but i really think that was his undoing today.

Guys we have had this discussion about companies on tour and how it goes in streaks of what company does well. For some reason this season the Storm/Roto Grip family of balls are doing better. A couple seasons ago Ebonite/Hammer did really well. A few before that Brunswick did really well. Mika has won with Brunswick as already stated. Back in 2005 Ameleto (sorry I know I spelled wrong) left Track used a Brunswick ball and won. Norm also used a Brunswick and won. If I recall they were back to back weeks. So to say that since they are using Brunswick they can't win is just flat out stupid.

Those were the days of the Absolute Inferno. Those balls showed up in a lot of tournament bags and on ball returns across this area.

Like was posted before, it goes in cycles. This year, Storm/Roto has been the best look out there. Next year it could be [you insert ball company name here].

If you look at consistancy over the last couple of years, Storm has had players on the show consistantly the last 4-5 years. This is during the Inferno, Ultimate, and Absolute days. This is during the Ebonite One/Total NV days.

All the ball companies want to do is get the ball exposure. What happens from there is a bonus.

Thing you also have to take into consideration is that they are paid to use the most up to date equipment out there. Mika has not had the same success with Brunswick as he had with Ebonite.  His televised 300 was a Stinger Low Flare on the Cheetah Pattern.  His game is tuned for drier conditions typically.  For those that say he has a low rev rate might want to take another look.  Would be willing to bet he is 350ish, which is a little lower than Barnes who is 425ish.  Also, barnes was throwing a Power Swing with surface whereas Mika was using a Smash Zone at box finish (polished).  Mika also used a polished Maxx Zone as well.  With all the success of the Inferno line, I am really surprised we have not seen a Rattler hit the waves.  I agree with another poster though, it is ALL about match up.

Yep was just about to post the 300 was with a Stinger low flare, it was very direct up the boards that game also.

i think it went like this

Big B dominated during the inferno era
ebonite/hammer dominated with the one and widow series
columbia did it to an extent last year with chris and wes throwing rivals and resurgences
and now storm/roto is doing it with the Troad/VG series and cells
