Building the ideal pro...
« on: August 05, 2007, 09:31:30 AM »
Throw in your own suggestions, just for fun...

* The physique of Walter Ray Williams,
* The raw potential for strength of Wes Mallott,
* The flexibility of Amleto Monicelli,
* The balance of Jeff Carter,
* The smoothness of Pete Weber,
* The focus of Brian Voss,
* The guile of Norm Duke,
* The tenacity of Ryan Shafer,
* The physical consistency of Chris Barnes,
* The outward attitude of Parker Bohn,
* The killer instinct of Jason Couch,
* The form of David Ozio,
* The release of Mike Machuga,

and two contributions from the dearly departed...

* The adaptability of Dick Weber,
* The inner strength of Earl Anthony.

Yours?

Jess

As far as balance goes I would actually go with Doug Kent...

Physique: Brian Voss
Tenacity and Killer Instinct: Earl Anthony
One ball to strike; Norm Duke
Accuracy: WRW and Duke
(FYI: Walter Ray regards himself as "fairly accurate")
Smoothness: David Ozio

THE Pressure bowler: Don Carter, without a doubt, having seen them all.

Dick Weber's name barely entered the listings, until Don Carter retired.

Longevity: Andy Varipapa did the virtually impossible when he won the All-STar Championship TWICE while he was in his mid 50's. The All-Star was a grueling 100 games in about a week's time. There's darn few pro alive today who can even bowl 100 games in a week. (Ozio and Anthony used to do that for in weekly practice sessions; rare or non-existent is the pro who does that now.)

When I was at the PBA all star shootout a few months ago, they mentioned that when the PBA took a poll asking a bunch of pros who's release you would like to have, PDW's surpassed everyone.

Tenacity should be Robert Smith. He's incredible under pressure.

I originally wrote Weber and then erased it, and opted for smoothness instead -- which you could apply to release.

I had the opportunity to bowl with Machuga for a game a couple of years ago, and the reason I opted for his over Weber is equal parts the ability to snap the ball and that I actually think he's a little more versatile than Weber.

I thought Machuga's release looked good on TV until I watched it from 10 feet. It's a thing of beauty.

The physique of Walter Ray Williams???????

I question both the choice of WRW and the use of the word "physique"!
