Title: Can you say house wall?
Post by: charlest on December 14, 2007, 12:06:16 PM
No PBA tournament should have qualifying averages of 230 - 240.

I don't care if it's all lefties or all righties. That is just not right.

C'mon guys.  You still have to throw the ball.

Just grip it & rip it!

Sure I can say it, doesn't mean it's what there bowling on.

They sure aren't on house patterns, these guys are just that good. It takes 225 average to make the show every single week.

Hell WRW and Rhino are averaging over 230 for 8 weeks!

But I do agree that there softer then they should be.

back in the days they had to throw the ball too  but high scores on the Pro Tour and at leagues as well is almost a joke...the only time you can tell from the real (league) bowlers IMO, are those who have a good spare game.

I remember (1987) when a guy at leagues who averaged 200 he as admired and at times feared..... it was like the Terminator walking into the center in slow motion...you couldn't make out his face because of the glare of the sunlight behind him when the door swung open...but you knew, you knew it was Big D....

Nowadays, you look around the league, about 20-30 guys average 200.....

first, jim rome is an idiot. that being said, the averages on tour are relevant. all they are trying to do is beat their opponent by one pin. if that takes 250's, fine. if that takes 200's, so be it. the pba has high scoring conditions, medium scoring conditions, and low scoring conditions. i guarantee you won't see high averages at the us open or the pba world championship. one last thing: the players can only bowl on what the pba puts down. and these are the best players in the world.

Ask the dozens of guys that shoe up every week to the PTQs that have cards and the amatuers that go 100 under if the patterns are too soft.  Some of these guys are the ones that are ahead of us in our local associations.

Stop sending in your entries folks, we have a winner!

Mark Roth was averaging over 215 with a Columbia White Dot back in the day, and you think 230 with resin is better?  If so, HOW?

House walls have been around a loooong time. I remember some cake shots in my teen years during the late 60's. Saw a few guys average 230 way back then in the EZ houses. The 70's and 80's were no different. I had a number of years booking booking 225-230 during the 80's on short oil using only my well-worn Black Hammer. Give any good bowler 2-3 boards at the break point and a stable shot AND a hard hitting ball and big scores are gonna happen.

Actually, you don't even need a good ball. I remember my first 700 back in 1969 - age 15 - in a walled up house - 236-218-279-733, using a 14-1/2 lb. Sears rubber ball drilled with the wrong span. Not a comfortable ball to throw - I hated it actually,  but I could slow hook it and score in that house. I booked close to 200 in that house - and barely carried 160 across town in a tougher house.

to those of you saying scores are outrageous... well, maybe they are. But think of this, suddenly the PBA averages are down to 210ish, now when joe schmo shows up for the ptq and has a good spare game and a double here and there... bam... joe is in 4th after qualifying.

The one helpful thing that the high scores do is seperate the good from the elite. Malott, Barnes, Rash and all the other pros are able to dominate these joe schmo's  in terms of average because they generally have better fundamentals, knowledge of ball reaction, ability to adjust to changing conditions and have put more time into the game.

If it takes 240 averages to show this distinction and to get this seperation from the THB to a Tour pro... than so be it, high scores are fine with me

You're making some bad or wrong assumptions somewhere along the line.

If the PBA guys are averaging 210, Joe Schmo is going to be lucky to average 175. That, you can bank on.

No! When the averages are this high, it becomes a "carry contest" and luck becomes a MAJOR factor and the degree to which skill affects the outcome becomes reduced.

I don't know if this is a popular opinion or not, but I am definitely with charlest on this one...  This year has been kind of fishy to me.

Whatever, Chris Everett was a fk'n prick and a sucky quarterback. Rome rocks, even though he is clueless about bowling.

Jim Rome has nothing to do with sports. Please let's drop him.
