Title: Chris Barnes...what will he leave?
Post by: bowlallthetime on March 07, 2009, 10:28:45 AM
If Chris Barnes has a chance to win a game in the 10th frame on Sunday, what pin(s) will he leave standing?

I predict a 3-6-10.

If Barnes ever does get the TV finals moneky of his back he's would be capable of winning 5+ tourney in a single season.  How many times has he been on TV this season?

I recall a few years ago when Duke was on TV 7 times without a single win.

Do you guys really think none of his shots so far this week, in this tournament, have been "big" or "clutch"?  Of all the shots thrown during the week in order to get on the show, you think the first pressure shot is Sunday at around 1:35pm?

I definitly agree that Barnes has had a ton of trouble on t.v., that being said everybody out there that wants to bash him as being a 'choke artist' is a bit off base. To win as many games and matches as he does on a regular basis in order to make so many shows takes quite a few clutch shots. The difference is all the things going on around him. This is why he doesn't perform to his abilities on t.v. Just read an article in one of the bowling publications about this very topic. He has t.v. breaks, fans, lights, lights' effect on the pattern, and lets not forget the other 3-4 guys each week had a pretty good look. T.V. is a different animal and yet he has still had some decent success out there so, lighten up a bit.

If the pressure is the same, why does he always come through during the week but routinely not come through on Sundays? Some miracle, probability defying coincidence?

As for the leave, it'll probably be a 7 pin.

I believe Chris Barnes holds the record with making the most shows in one season without a win. I think it was 12 or so back in 2000 or 2001

Barnes is an very talented and awesome bowler. It's just fun the bash him as a choke artist on TV.

The truly great ones don't fail as much as he does when the chips are on the line. He has 64 TV shows and only 10 titles compared to TJ who has only 22 TV shows but 12 titles. Mika has 28 shows and 8 titles, PA has 32 shows and 12 wins and Doug Kent has 36 shows and 10 titles. The only ones that really really come close to Barnes in TV fail percentage is Scroggins (34 shows, 5 titles) and Shafer (48 shows and 4 titles). Both of these guys have more years than Barnes.

Kinda reminds me of the Atlanta Braves of the 1990's--early 2000's. If memory serves me,they have something like a run of 14 or so division titles and only 1 World Series title in this span.
Barnes is a great talent--there's no doubt. It just seems that he gets to a point and lets adrenaline take over and overthrow or underthrow that one crucial shot that ends up costing him a title.
It kind of explains how he won so well in that Motel 6 tournament. Only rolling half a game seems to be his strong point. Any more than that and he does as I said above.
Look at last week. Front 5 or 6 and he loses the game.

A repeat of my post is necessary---he will win if it is a runaway---or if he needs only a mark and can get lucky enough to leave a single pin....

I posted in another thread---Chris Barnes obviously is very good when the TV cameras arent on. He is winning match play all the freaking time---which is more than many of us could even dream about. That said, if he needs a shot on TV---Im betting against him...

Read below...

Someone asked about Chris Barnes title match victories.....

Majors:
2005 US Open
Barnes 213-Allen 212
I believe this is where Barnes left a 2 pin on his 2nd shot of the 10th and converted to win.

2006 Tournament of Champions
Barnes 234-Jaros 227
Barnes needed a mark in the 10th to win.

Other titles:

1999 Erie, PA
Barnes 214-Kasimakis 197

1999 Portland, OR
Barnes 278-Duke 207

2001-2002 Hendersonville, TN
Barnes 234-Scroggins 195

2002-2003 Dallas, TX
Barnes 244-Bohn 194

2003-2004 Tokyo, Japan
Barnes 210-Jones 179

2006-2007 Irving, TX
Barnes 235-May 216 (Barnes needed count in the 10th to win)

2007-2008 El Paso, TX
Barnes 241-Jones 158

2007-2008 Columbus, OH
Barnes 209-Simard 197 (Barnes 9/7 in the 10th gave Simard a chance to strike out to win, but Simard could only get the 1st one). This was the day where Barnes piped the ball to the pocket on the right lane. But when he needed 9 to lock it up, he throws 7 on the fill. Simard left a baby split.

Now a real response-------

If the match is tight, it depends on his shot in the 8th.

If he is flush, there is no telling where the ball might go.
If he is light-very light---but strikes, he will throw it in the same spot. He may get lucky, he may not.
If he leaves at least a 2 pin or light 7, he will go high in the 10th. (4 pin or worse).
If he goes high at all in the 8th, he will leave a 2 pin, plus something to go with it. Lucky---2-4-5. Unlucky---2-8-10.

Anyone watching knows they are expecting it.

And yet he keeps getting there.....

It may not be the first pressure shot, but it's usually the last one he makes, right around 1:47pm.

Honestly, I get a kick out of watching him fall apart. He shoulda won against O'Neill last week, but failed when he "got comfortable" with front 6 and Bill seemed to be laying down. He makes the show more interesting, each week trying to guess what he'll do to send himself home.

He typically misses that spare to let someone back into a match, or spot someone a lead. Typically a mental lapse. Ive seen him do it early in matches where he is struggling with ball reaction, then he finally gets to the hole only to miss a 4, 7, or 10 pin---his brain relaxes because he got to the pocket.

Then there are the Haugen situations. He has a such a lead where again, he relaxes. He is just trying to coast to victory and just lets off the gas somehow---and bang, its a match again.

Not eating crow until he goes into the 10th, needing a double---heck, even 1 strike---to win, and does it.

He did great today and did what he had to do---obviously. Im not hating on him here. I would just like to see him deliver like he does in match play, on TV. 10th frame, everyone watching, and he pures it.

He's the best physicaly game---everyone knows it---I would just like to see it translate into being a dominant player. Then Ill buy into CB. Until then....

Memory serves me correctly, Barnes was UP 51 to O'Neill last week before he "choked".  He was landsliding him until the baby split in the 7th.  The difference is yesterday, he did not repeat the bad shots that usually get him into trouble.  He threw it pretty pure all day long and it wasn't until Mika left the split in the 7th or 8th that really sealed it for him.

Also, I thinh the difference this week, was that since all bowlers were on the lane at the same time, he was more loose.  It was not a one on one match until the final in which in title games, he has pretty much owned Mika (3-1).

Congratulations to Barnes! He wins another title. He is a GREATE bowler. Its tough to get to the TV finals and he has been there alot in his career.

BUT

When he has been in matches on TV and he needs a mark or strike in the 9th or 10th frames to win....Barnes has had trouble. Which usually means he has thrown the ball bad (I will not put the word in here). Yesterday's win has not changed my view on this.

Title: Re: Chris Barnes...what will he leave?
Post by: NOTHUMB on March 09, 2009, 03:59:24 PM
2 Points and then Im done talking about Barnes until he is on the show next..............

Point #1
People in these debates about Barnes invariably mention the times that Earl Anthony or Walter Ray were on TV and lost.

The big difference is the way they lose. It feels like (whether its true or not, Im not arguing) Barnes gives away more matches, than just getting beat. If he would get beat losing carry, we would say "He got unlucky". But WE NEVER SAY THAT. Because it doesnt happen. When Barnes loses we question 2 things---did he choke? and did he play the right line/throw the right ball?

When Walter loses---even when he leaves an 8-10---firm with a little hand, even on the hooking pattern. Not really a choke. Just not a perfect shot. Alot of times with Barnes, as fans, I think we would accept an ok shot to lose. If Barnes goes solid 10 in the 10th against Bill O'neill, Im not calling him a choke artist (I didnt even when he left a 2-8-10). Would he have lost anyway? Yes---but its how you lose. Barnes just seems to lose in the most painful of ways. And in some sick way because of how arrogant he comes across---I enjoy it.

Point #2

Someone in another post commented on his 2 Roll to Riches wins which were both big money wins. The tournament where he needed 1 shot to win---he threw it jersey.

The tournament where he had a 1 strike lead---he threw it flush.

That is Chris Barnes---if he absolutely has to have ONE shot on the show, he yacks it. Not all the time---but alot for someone in his position.

He is consistently better when he has a cushion. Even the match against Haugen could have been a runaway. He left 2 ringing 10's that could have made that match very cozy. It put him in a shot where 1 out of 2 was good enough to get him a tie---and he couldnt do it.......

+1
-1

It doesnt matter---he is way better than all of us. He probably better than all of them out on tour. But his results on the show, arent better than all of them out on tour. His 11 wins are better than most on tour---but he thinks he's the best, and he hasn't been when it counts the most.

It's not that I don't disagree with the people saying Barnes has some mental issues when he needs a big shot, I'm just saying that even when the guys wins you morons come on here and ridicule him for winning by a landslide and not needing a to be "clutch".  I mean give it a rest a simple, good bowling would be plenty.
Title: Re: Chris Barnes...what will he leave?

I get what youre saying.  He did bowl well and deserved to win the title.  I'm just waiting to see him break thru and strike out in the 10th to win a title.  He hasn't show that he can do that.  I would like him to get over his mental issues, I just doubt that he will be able to. '

For the past 5 years, people have been saying, "Chris Barnes is going to break thru and overcome his TV issues"....still hasn't happened.  Winning a blowout match for a title is different than throwing 3 in the 10th to win.

I DID NOT see the show!  I have commented before that it often now looks like his bad shots go right and have nothing left at the pocket(different from his old squeeze down at the foul line mistake).

It was said he is now working with Mark Baker and expects the changes to result in more wins...this being the first.

Anyone see the difference in ball roll and can describe it?

I didnt call him arrogant---I said he comes across as being arrogant. If he is a nice guy, thats fine. I fully understand that bowling on tour you have to have at least some sized chip on your shoulder.

Im also the same person who thinks Norm Duke is disingenuine when on tv. His almost crying and all that after he wins just seems a little much. And when I asked a couple people from the tour---they agreed...
--------------------

Chris Barnes is not a choker---he is just a great opponent to draw on TV.
