I thought things looked bleak when they shrunk first place from $40K to $25K. It's downright embarassing now, but how can there be a PBA if 1st place is less than $25K?
In my opinion, "exempt status" has run its course and has proven to be less than a fan-enthusiastic concept. In fact, I believe it has hurt the tour, but that's just me.
The current economic depression is not what's killing the PBA. It's just helping to dig the grave.

Might be best to revisit this in 3-4 months. Pieces of encouraging news has come out in the last couple of months regarding the general overall state of the economy going forward, with what has been a pretty dry drip starting to look a little bit more like a steady trickle.
The thing that is killing the health of the tour itself from a paycheck standpoint right now is the ESPN deal. I think the PBA doesn't realize that it is in a position of strength with that deal (given the circumstances of television today, and the PBA's head-to-head slot against the NFL, the numbers are pretty good). They can and should renegotiate it, or take it to another network, even one of the niche networks.

Yeah, personally the first thing they need is to get better represenation. How do they expect to negotiate a deal if they always go in as if they are in the position of weakness.

Take it to Versus and run shows on Saturdays! Versus has actually done a decent job with the NHL and I think they could be a nice change for the PBA.
-
I liked the old step ladder format and the old King of the hill.
Go back to having the tournaments open to all pros.
and then branch out from there.

While a good thought, This would not allow anyone who has DirecTV (Including myself
) to watch the PBA...Apparently Comcast and Directv cant agree on whats a fair price for the rights to broadcast the network. So no hockey for me except for the few games i can catch on the NHL network and NBC.

Britton - side topic but I thought I would ask you. Besides the no Versus deal, how is directv? Any major issues? I am heavily considering dumping my local cable station cause their HD package sucks and most of the channels I pay extra for freeze up and get to the point where it's unwatchable. Thanks.

I love it, i have been a subscriber since i had my first place on my own, so about 4-5 years now. Their customer service is good, and last time i checked dollar for dollar and channel for channel they kicked Comcasts (My local cable company) butt price wise. Lots of HD channels too, which is just about all i watch anymore...My ONLY gripe is the occasional loss of service during a thunderstorm. Doesnt always happen but if the wind and rain is bad enough it will cut out.
If you do decide to go with them, keep me in mind for the refer a friend deal...we can each get $100 credit on our bills if you sign up with my account number on top of their best offer
Now back to your regularly scheduled "Future of the PBA..." thread

I am in the same boat with Versus but reliable sources are saying it will be back on DirecTV on March 22nd.
If you go on www.dbstalk.com you can follow what is going on with a lot of DirecTV things.

Like everyone else in America, hope they can ride the wave until the economy gets better... The mainstream media keeps saying it is, but I'm not seeing it yet... I really enjoy watching the PBA. The Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg, IL had their rest area TVs tuned into last weeks match... I told the ladies to go shop, I'll wait here & rest the dogs a bit, LoL!!

Awesome news, thanks for the link. I saw on there that Comcast lost a court case that will somewhat force them to share, which means i may finally be able to watch Phillies games on directv on a regular basis.

I hate to keep going off topic, but DishNetwork is what I have and it's been flawless, and it has Versus if you get the 250 package. Tons of HD channels!
-
The problem for me is that Dish Network doesn't offer a lot of the sports packages. Like MLB extra innings.
And they compress their HD channels more then DirecTV. Referred to as "HD-Lite". That is how they can currently offer more HD channels then DirecTV, although once the D12 Satellite goes active, that will all change.
Good times are ahead for DirecTV subscribers. And no I don't work for them.

That's why I got rid of Directv because I couldn't get any Phillies games. Might have to switch back if this is true cuase I like Directv alot more than Comcast.

Yeah, I'd never get Comcast... We have Wide Open West (WOW). Not as many problems & their service is much much better when there is..... Used to have Direct TV, but any thunder storm, high winds & what not always scrambled the picture... Was irritating as all get out...

Knock on wood, we have gone through some major storms with wind, rain and snow and have had no problems. I think their equipment is a lot better then it used to be.
I am just happy not to have Cablevision anymore.

Getting back on topic.
Would it be a good idea for the PBA to open up all the fields and just broadcast the events on the Extra Frame PBA service for a year or two just to get some financial stability.
I know the payout would not be as big but you would get more paid entries and not have to worry about paying for the TV slot. And still have local sponsors for the event.

The first thing to find out is how much the PBA is paying for the TV slot. Then reduce that cost to zero (surely Versus, CSS or another network would carry it fee-free at worst), amortize what you saved in the process and see where you are.
If it's costing the PBA, say, $1 million to put on the show, over a 15-tournament schedule that's $66,666 that can be plowed back into the prize fund. Next thing you do is go to your sponsors and see how much you'll gain or lose by it being off ESPN. Then it's just a matter of running the numbers and seeing where the best deal is. Given that most sponsors seem to be jumping off the tour, just how important is that Bayer deal, anyway, compared to what you might get elsewhere from cost savings? Not to mention that I think Versus would actually pay to land the rights.

The ESPN deal hasn't exactly been a God send. But putting the show on a limited availability network would likely be the end of the PBA - this is the beer crowd guys and gals. They should consider some of the smaller nation-wide network players that are just filling time on the weekends. Come to that I don't care if they put it on CNBC which fills time continually after the stock market closes.
-
I think some of you really overvalue the PBA broadcast. I bet not one channel around would offer to pay to air the PBA right now. ESPN likes it because it garners decent ratings in horrible time slots.
-
I think we answered the question here in this post. LOL It started off as a topic about the PBA, but a majority of the posts are about which cable/dish/whatever service you are subscribed to. We are supposed to be the ones that love bowling enough to come on a bowling website, yet we can't even talk about the tour without changing the subject. It's ironic lol. Carry on

I had the LL deal time frame wrong and corrected that in the blog. My apologies for the error and thanks to Tom Clark for catching it and correcting me.

The meeting is in Norwich at the Go Rving championship. It should be interesting. I am volunteering for the week so we could get a first hand account and some interesting takes from the players I hope. I`ll try to post as soon as everything becomes official.
