I think Randy Penderson made a good point when he was talking about TJ and mentioned that TJ need to learn how to win.

I put Chris Barnes in that same category. Although he has won titles in the past, between last years "roll to riches" and this years TOC win he has learned to "bring it".

Barnes has had such lousy luck on TV that he doesn't seem to have much confidence anymore.  Whether it's bad luck now or bad bowling now, he doesn't seem to respond well to the TV pressure.  During the week when he's bowling very well, it just doesn't seem to have sunk in that he's close to the win or close to the show.  Like the first three our four balls of a 300 game, there just isn't the same kind of pressure as there is for the last three or four balls.

TJ, on the other hand, has all the confidence in the world.  He learned how to win and he seems to handle the pressure extremely well.  He never seems to be bothered or overly pumped-up, he keeps his emotions in check very well.

I think, though, that when he starts losing on TV more regularly, he'll settle in to being not significantly better or worse than most top-10 pros.  He'll win some, lose some, but I don't see him going 3-and-11 on TV like Barnes has.  Plus the 12 shows he made in 2000 or 2001 where he won no titles.  That's gotta hurt.

Inverted,

Actually, if you watch the show again, Randy did not state that TJ needs to learn how to win, but that in the past, he did not know how to.  And after he got a couple wins under his belt, he has the confidence to win everytime he steps out onto the lanes.  Kind of hard for someone to state that he needs to learn when he has the highest winning percentage on tv in the history of the PBA.

2handedbowler,

There was a post in the forums about a month ago about Norm being a choker, which he is not.  It wasn't as though Norm was shooting 150s or 170s on tv.  He was losing while shooting 220+.

babz299,

What monkey did Barnes get off his back?  He has now won a major the last 2 seasons (he was the 2005 US Open Champion).

Chris has and always be one of my favorites.  So what if he has had some struggles on tv.  There isn't one of us that wishes we could not be in his shoes.  I know I wish I was him

Inverted,

I agree with you 100%.  Chris should have about 15 titles by now if it wasn't for brain lapses.  I had the pleasure of speaking to him here in Atlanta.  Super nice guy!!!  Once he gets a couple breaks go his way, I think he can give TJ a run.  I think that is what the tour lacks is a really good rivalry.  If you get on the PBA what Tiger vs Phil has done on the PGA, it will attract even more fans to the sport.  But, I know that is easier said than done.
