Crappy spare shooting
« on: November 22, 2009, 10:27:00 AM »
Wow. Spare shooting today was among the worst I've ever seen on a telecast. Amleto's missed 10 pin can certainly be forgiven, but the rest was just horrible. Rash's 6 out was one of the worst spare shots I've ever seen thrown on TV.

Amleto Monacelli had a ton of opens during the match due to injury and still had a good shot at winning. 170s to 140s.

I was disappointed with the show period!

The lanes were sucky.  The bowlers boring.

The bowlers were throwing non-agressive balls.  This
is crazy for a Chameleon.

And, I think this whole WSOB is stupid.  They
bowl the qualifying rounds in a newer, less
friction house.  Then, they move to that
bey and way too much friction.  This is nutz.

What other sport would do this?  Does the British
Open switch Golf courses from the Qualifying round
to the Final round.  How about NASCAR?  Does NASCAR
do the qualifying days on a different track than on
race day?  And, I could go on.

And, If I were the ball manufacturers I would be
very disappointed in the PBA.  With the bey having
so much more friction, you do not see the bowlers
using and scoring well with their high performance
bowling balls.  The last two tournaments have been
won with urethane it is like the sport is going
backwards to the 80's.

I do not like the direction the PBA is going in.

And, since I am in a bad mood over this nonsense,
I am very disappointed in the USBC magazine I just
received in the mail.

If we want bowling to become a big time sport, then
we do not need a cigar ad in that magazine (pg. 14).
Does Sports Illustrated have smoking ads in their
magazine?  And, the jewelry ads are chincy makes
this magazine look like a tabloid magazine, not a
magazine for the sport of bowling.

the low scoring pace can be attributed to the older synthetic lanes in the arena section of thunderbowl-----randy pedersen mentioned this in the telecast.

amleto's missing the 10 pin was understandable considering the pain he was in. the others missing their spares was a lack of focus. sean rash whiffed all four pins on his attempt at the 3-6-9-10.....clearly a lack of focus.

i'm all for "the shot" being tough. a premium should be placed on shot-making....not raw power.

The conditions sure didn't bother the women at all and I believe bother of them were clean. Also Shanon bowled an excellent game didn't see the final score but she had a chance for 279. Even with the excuse of conditions the spares missed were terrible no excuse missing a 4, 7 and a 10 and Sean Rash shooting at 4 pins and missing all of them terrible

i agree partially. carolyn was lost. i think this year's spare shooting has been terrible all the weeks (for the men). i don't get the 25 mph viz-a-ball rifle at all spares. it looks like the young snot nosed kids that i see locally trying to show off. i know you are stronger than me. you just need to be accurate at spares. and i loved the new guy that lost in title match saying how did spare ball hook. it didn't hook that much you missed your target by a mile. even my 85 year old mom saw it the minute you let go.

The lanes were definitely toast on the right hand side, even though I am not a fan of CDB she was clearly at a huge disadvantage to Shannon, that being said with the way Shannon was dialed in I am not sure that CDB could have caught her.

Spare shooting was definitely at a premium with the men and ultimately what cost Ronnie Russell his first title.

I guess I don't get why you guys are whining causes of the surface.

These guys are pros they should know how to handle a tough surface, they should know how to handle tougher patterns. I didnt see one bowler ball down to a entry level ball, like a Groove or Scout. The only guy that bothered to go right INTO the oil was O'neil.

I would like to know what drill patterns they were using also as that would have made a huge difference also.

In response to the comment about Urethane gear, some of my friends and I have used Urethane gear at wooden house on Cheetah fresh and a little on used Chameleon and it works just fine, that is SMART bowling, just cause you have SUPER HOOK balls doesnt mean you need them to knock pins down.

I think the scoring pace is so low is they did not get a lot of time to practice on the tv pair. They are bowling on the fresh and they usally have them all grooved up so they can score.

So what I am reading here is, and correct me if I am wrong, that some of you are upset that these bowlers showed they are human, made mistakes, and had to grind for the title.

Some say horrible bowling, I say great to see a fight for the title.

I personally enjoyed watching Bill win his match on t.v. yesterday more than I did watching him shoot 300 live in person against John Nolen to win the Surfside Beach Regional yesterday..which was on Chameleon as well. albeit different surface and a regional version of the pattern
