Dave Ryan
« on: March 06, 2004, 10:13:58 PM »
Please tell me im not the only one who thinks
Dave Ryan has to go. The guy knows absolutely
nothing about the SPORT of bowling. He is more
concerned about advertising for ESPN then the
matchs. What ever happened to the pros pointers?
Why dont they show what balls the pros are using?
They really have to do something for us non pros
to learn from these guys. Dave Ryan is not the
answer.

Who do you suggest to replace him?  Some boring pro who just talks about what it was like in the old days and stuff?  If you can think of someone interesting, then you have my vote to hack dave.  Afterall, robert smith can really crank that plastic, and Osku's power diesel is a great spare ball.

And about the ESPN advertsing, well, let me tell you a secret:  he works for them, and reads a teleprompter!!  He doesn't do it for himself, you know.

Yeh Yeh Yeh i know he reads off a telepromter.
But come on, every other shot they are talking
about stuff other then the match at hand. Im
glad im not Randy and have to work next to Dave
and work for ESPN when all they worry about is
advertising. I think Del Ballard would fit in
great. Randy does a superb job and hes a pro.
He knows bowling and the patterns and the
different styles of play. Del knows the game
as well.

I agree that the constant advertising for other ESPN shows is annoying, but that's what you get when your product is professional bowling.

I really don't care that Dave Ryan doesn't know that much about bowling, I just wish he'd learn to keep quiet once in a while.  Randy needs to stuff a sock in his mouth at the crucial point of each match.  The guy just doesn't know when to shut up, and let the product do the talking.

I think Dave Ryan is much improved over the beginning of the season.  He's learning about the game.

The PBA shows haven't had pointers or "what's in the bag" (which were just Brunswick ads anyway) segments in quite some time.  How is that Ryan's fault?

I'm sure PBA signed a agreement with ESPN where ESPN appointed Dave Ryan the spot.

He doesn't bother me like he does the rest of you. Just as long as they have one guy up there that knows what hes talking about, i'm fine.

i agree with getting baldo and randy in the booth together. besides, it looks like they'll have plenty of free time next season.

I agree Ryan should go. He makes some of the dumbest
statements. Usually one or more a show. Today he
was talking about how Barnes is in running for player
of the year. How dumb is that? To my way of thinking
Barnes isn't even in consideration. Yes, he has made
7 TV shows but what has he done after he got on. There
are at least 5 people more deserving than Barnes. I
don't know who ESPN could get to take his place but
surely there is a sportscaster out there that knows
understands bowling. Or at least one that can shut-up
once in a while and not make really stupid statements
every show.

You want excitement in the commentator booth, bring in Dicky V baby!!! Teach him a bit about the game and it will be the most exciting show to watch on Sundays!!

I can hear him now.... "He's got a 5 bagger, BABY"

That would be fun to watch.

And how great was the immortal Chris Schenkel when he first started doing bowling on ABC?  Give the man a little time.  I've been bowling since I was 5 (that'd be 20 years for you non math majors out there) and I don't know everthing there is to know.  Dave Ryan isn't the bowling expert, that's Randy's job, and a good job at that.  He's there to provide some balance so there is something else going on besides the ultra technical stuff.  They are trying to expand the fan base to the average, once a week bowler that buys 1 ball a year.  So cut Dave some slack.

Better yet, can Pedersen and put Marshall back on.

Randy is a much better color commentator than Marshall.  Holman puts me to sleep.

There's a reason Randy got the job over Holman, Voss and Ozio.  It's because he's the best of the bunch.  His enthusiasm for the game is contagious!

If he was new to bowling...I would...however...he is not. In Syracuse there was a local show on Saturday mornings for juniors and Sundays for adults, Challenge Bowling and Championship Bowling respectively. Dave announced for both of these. Yes, this was going on some 10 years ago..even more, but he was the guy along with a local pro around here. He was just as dumb and annoying then as he is now. Trust me. There is nothing worse then getting a chance to bowl on TV, watch the tape, and listen to this guy behind you...

I agree that Dave Ryan is horrible.  I was watching the match with Barnes.  After playing fifth arrow and not getting a ball to finish, he moves ten boards right and goes dead flush.  What gets said between Dave and Randy?  That Barnes made a good ball switch.  If he did switch balls, then it was an Ultimate Inferno drilled differently.  However I thought the bigger adjustment was the 10 boards he moved right.  And since it has been mentioned, I have noticed that the advertising gets to be a little much during the telecast.

didnt chris barnes himself say "good ball change" just a few seconds before the announcers mentioned it? (right around the fourth or fifth frame)

id like to see dave ryan replaced though.....
