Dickenson Gets 1st Exemption
« on: October 06, 2005, 01:48:50 AM »
Gary Dickenson gets the 1st exemption for the tourney in Tulsa.   http://pba.com/news/default.asp?ID=4130

I for one am very happy to see Gary get it.  Great player with a timeless delivery and accuracy.  Plus the best sportsmanship I can remeber in a long time.  Younger players could learn a lot from watching Gary conduct himself on and off the lanes.

Agreed, 110%.

But most will watch his revs and assume they can do better than his 35 year career; they should be so lucky; they should be so good!

Gary, is and always was one of my favorites.

I really liked his attitude, and his game.

I've bowled with him in Pro-am, when I was a youth.  What a sour puss....

If you weren't from OKC, he bowled okay for you.  He would hardly say anything to you at all.  If you were from OKC, it was different, big games and lots of interaction.  He could be assigned to bowl on your lanes and he'd be off talking to some friends from the city.

Classy my foot...

Sorry you had a bad experience Andrew.  I know Gary very well and couldn't ever say I saw him treat a person poorly.

I also believe you could say poor things about any pro bowler.  Many say bad things about many of the stars of yesteryear and present.....wish it would have been a better experience for you.

"Dickinson, a three-time Steve Nagy PBA Sportsmanship Award winner from 1972-74, won three Tour titles in 1973."  This is a peer given award...Gary does typify being a gentleman on and off the lanes.

BTW--The one guy who I think most emulates Gary's game is Dave Arnold both very robot like but accurate as heck with medium revs and very stoic....not what the new style player is all about in any way, shape or form.

I see Gary at the lanes every time I go to practice. He used to give lessons, but no longer does so.

OK I made a good call here....Dickenson first player ever with Commish's exemption to make it the Round of 32.  Bowls "The Rat" Micheal Haugen this morning.  http://www.pba.com/livescoring/livescoring.aspx

Not the first.... Tim Penner did it last year in Wichita.

But he still was a good choice and can still bowl.

Yep PB I forgot about Penner.  Looks like lefties may rule this week.

Looks like he's advancing to the round of 16.  That's awesome.

Not looking too good against TJ at the moment.

He'll have to really step up in the next 4 games to get to the show.

Gary got knocked out by Paul Fleming but he made it farther on a Commish's exemption than most exempt players.  To bad there isn't a Nat'l Senior Tour.

Are y'all sure he got knocked out by Fleming?  I think y'all bit a little early on the live scoring screw-ups.  http://pba.com/news/features.asp?ID=4173 seems to suggest that he beat Paul and moved on to the Round of 8.
