Did WRW Choke?
« on: February 17, 2008, 12:09:19 PM »
or is he judged by a different standard than Chris Barnes?
He is the greatest bowler in history according to the PBA.

I don't know about WRW, but if Barnes had done what PDW did in the tenth there would have been four threads about it.  I enjoy Pete, and also realize when someone has 34 titles they're held to a different standard than someone who has 8...just sayin'.

LOL!!!!

I know I choke on it...they're going overboard...I think Randy feels the same way (at times).
It's starting to detract from the intensity of the matches.

Choke... in the first frame???? I dont think so, bad shot, missed spare. As for Pete choking, he made an adjustment after almost leaving the 4-7-9 the last time on that lane and he was even supprised it went high, choke... no... bad adjustment... yes!

Walter is HUMAN, and he is OLD!

I would consider it to be more of an "off" day than a choke. If you compare the weeks scores to the telecast, then all 5 finalist "choked".

If it was Chris Barnes, there'd be quite a few people on here calling HIM a choke...
1st frame or not.

I don't think WRW choked. he only missed the pocket like once the whole day and that one was his best strike! lol He was having problems with carring the 10 pin today and just couldn't get it lined up. I don't think barnes chokes either, except when he wiffed the 10pin and lost that match to haugen but most of the time he just gets bad breaks. Im sure WRW or CB actually cares though...their winnings is what over 4 million?

At that level, any miss of any single pin in any frame is going to fall back on the bowler, unless there was an extraordinary circumstance (i.e., shoe sticking horribly and the player hits his leg, etc.).

Williams made a critical mental error, and you could call it a choke if you like. The difference between his and Barnes' missed 10 of a couple weeks back is the scenario is different -- same thing when a kicker misses a field goal on the game' opening drive compared to missing it with 30 seconds left in the game.

My question is why is it bad to point out the obvious? Even the best gag on pressure sideways from time to time. No, I surely couldn't do any better than these guys do but deflecting criticism when it's warranted is intellectually dishonest.

Scroggins is a perfect example. He has choked out a bunch of single pins in the past but he got that bugaboo fixed this year and has two titles because of it, and deserves a ton of praise for his efforts. Just like Barnes deserved praise for playing against type on the Shark pattern and winning when everyone else was looking like us amateurs.

I wouldn't call it a choke. He just wasn't at the top of his game, and was having trouble hitting his mark by a little bit and getting bad breaks. Everyone misses a pin every once in a while, the pros just miss less often, so not such a big deal should be made over Williams' 10 pin miss. Im just happy for scroggins, he has really struggled until recently.

I think that WR got "rattled" a bit after missing the ten pin.  That was so out of charactor for him, it even surprised him.  He seemed to not be able to shake it off.    Kept fussing about it and other things.    His normally great mental game just unraveled a  bit.

I guess when you're almost perfect at single pins...like WRW is...you expect to make them, especially on TV.

Is it only me??  I know WRW is having a great year, but everytime he is on TV, I think his carries really is horrible.  I really don't think he matches up well with MoRich.  Now because of his skill, I think he is making it work, but if you look back at all the times he was on tv this year, he really has not carried well....Imagine if he had something different.

Did anyone but me hear Dave Stone and Randy Peterson talk about WRW's new wrist protector, they were looking for excuses for WRW for not winning the tournament, more than excepting the fact that Scroggins just plain beat WRW
