Doug Kent throwing 15 lb balls??
« on: November 14, 2004, 09:31:07 AM »
If Kent needs/wants to throw 15 lb balls, I'm only 6', 220 lbs. I better step down to 13 lbs ... I mean how can a man who probably dead lift Jason Hurd use 15 lb balls??

I am 6 foot 280 and I throw 15.  I have lots of revs because of it plus it saves on my shoulder.  But as potent as the equipment is these days you do need less ball.  Youd be surprised how many pros throw 14lb balls. There are quite a few.  The 14 s and 15lbs hit jjust as good as the sixteens if not better. I would never go back up if anything i might even drop to 14.  My proshop guy already has dropped to 14.

I don't know anyone that throws 16 anymore.. Everyone has mainly dropped to 15 and some even 14. I personally dropped to 15 about 2 years ago..

Guys,

There was a smiley face on that.

FYI I switched to 15 lbs around 1997 when I had a bad hip problem. Took me 4-6 months to get used to it. I actually have significant better timing and a freer arm swing with 16 lb balls and so I save a few precious ones. However, as I age more and more (so freaking painful to admit that), I need 15 lb balls after working 12 hours shifts and still have to bowl that night. So every ball I buy lately is 15 lbs. Sigh ... next confession.

As mentioned before, 15s hit as hard or harder than 16s.  15s also give you a few more revs, and give you a little extra deflection, to carry off hits.  Being stronger, doesn't mean you need a heavier ball.  At that rate, many would be using 16lb+ balls, if allowable.

Light weight could save you elbow issues down the road too; I went to 15s 14 years ago after a season of bad mechanics initiated tendonitis.

Food for thought ...

Bob,

That was rude, crude and ... probably right. It's quite a shame that people like him, Walliczek and a few others will never get used to the cameras, lights and the crowds. I used to think that Healey was one of those but he got used to it and made some great pressure shots over the past few years.

I thought I might be one of those, but 10 -12 years ago I made the finals in some amateur tournament. Can't even recall it. They filmed the fials for local TV. I was sooooo nervous. I threw absolutely horrendous shots and opened in the first 2 frames; then, I got all twisted inside and talked myself into bowling; finished with 225 or 237 or some such bizarrely high score for having opened twice. Unfortunately the guy I was bowling not only had 30 pins more handicap, he threw the last 4 or 5 strikes with either brooklyns or dead-on nose hits and he won. I was PO'd. But I learned the cameras are a state of mind.

How does a 16 hit too hard?  Too hard a hit causes what?

16 hits harder.  Physics dictates it at same speed.

Particularly on carrydown 16 hits harder.
Also I have thrown 16 only occasionally and I will tell you I get tons more strikes than I deserve.  (Also have more bad games).  One time I threw 299 with about 4 whiffs at release.  The game would have been another 212 with 15!

I'm convinced if I used 16 I'd have about 10 more 300s than I have now(none). No higher an average, more low games and a sore shoulder.  Have one at 15.

On the tour since almost always the backends are flying 15 hits good enough.

When I've bowled on Pba patterns I strike much more easily when I touch the head pin than I do on league.

I've thrown 15s and 16s on THS,hitting power and carry is the same for me.The "feel" of the weight coming out of my hand is the only difference that is noticable.I tend to throw the 15s when I'm feeling fatigued

Most pro's have power built into their game and the need for deflection and carry may mean the difference in a check or not. Most standard patterns "THS" will not bring the difference to light but like many have stated most pro's use 15lbers and quite a few have gone to 14 or at least dabbled for a while. When you throw as much as they do you really need to look at impact on the body as a factor. Unless you throw with high speed or very little hand 16 offers no benefits over 15. It does take a while to get used to, but almost everyone we have ever switched over has had good results. My one negative to my statement is my wife. I have tried so hard to switch her, every 15 she has tried did not give her the hit she needed to be effective. (She is pretty good she averages between 190-195 with minimal revs.)

Lefty-hitrak,

I have to disagree. I went to 15 lb balls back in 1997 because of a hip injury. I can still rip the cover off a 15 lb ball. It does not ever deflect.

BUT with a 16 lb ball, like LuckyLefty said, you (actually, I) get more strikes, PLUS, it helps my timing. I can too easily get too muscular with a 15 lb-er. I much less likely to get that way with a 16 lb-er, PLUS, I can last longer later into the night. So, sadly, I use 15 lb balls, about 97-99% of the time.

Charlest and some others,

I guess i will agree to disagree. I think many things are relative to the bowler's style and also to todays balls. Some pro's have dabbled or gone to 14lbers due to the strong nature of the cores and covers to further enhance deflection. Muscling and timing is related to each said individual and flaws in their game. (I know when I'm in a rut my 16lb chaos comes out as that ball always seems to help straighten out my timing) For most though I believe the use of 16 over 15lbs bears no advantage. If 16 works good for you, great, but that one extra pound is no more advantage than anything else and possibly even slightly detrimental to your scoring capability.
