Norm Duke proves once again he is one of the
most versitile bowlers on the tour.
He was locked in from start to finish, playing
in virgin territory.
How he made that shot look so easy is why he is
so good.

all bowlers( especially younger ones )would be well advised to pay attention to the lesson norm duke showed today.
-
I could not possibly have said it better than the previous post. What do you want, to win or to look cool?
A truly great example of what it's really all about.

Signature? I don't need no stinking signature...

THS is why straighter is NOT greater until you bowl on flatter patterns you will NOT realize that. What is the youth bowler raised on today? The THS!
Until that changes I don't see anything else changing.

I'm a youth, I bowl mostly on a THS... I like bowling straighter, I feel I have more control and accuracy compared to when i swing it

I'm going to start throwing it straighter. Last week during a pre-bowl it was a disaster going coast-to-coast. First game I even threw a gutter ball for the first time in like 10 years. My first two games where I hooked the lane 163-167. Then I was like screw this. I moved where Norm bowls and put some speed on the ball and got 235. I had 7 of 8 in the first 8 frames but my strikes wore out.
Straight FTW!

From boards 1 - 10 on the typical/average house shot, it is so dry, you're lucky to be able to start the ball around boards 8/9/10, and then you better be close to 20 mph or have 3 revs.
The 5 board, where Duke played today, is a virtual out of bounds, if you have any revs.

Exactly....I can't see going near 5 where I am. You just can't, it sounds great, "straight is great" but if you have any hand whatsoever on a THS, straight is not great.

-
i can play 1-10 with my plastic ball if i want to, nothing else will have a chance to stay right of the headpin...i agree with previous post that most youth bowl on THS and it is impossible to play where duke did unless they practiced with a plastic ball...

Indeed. This past Friday, I tried a semi-polished Blue/Green Centaur up the 8/9 area for the first game. By the time I got into the 2nd game, I was inside of 10, swinging it out to 7/8 at 40 feet, with some speed. Heck, by the 2nd of the 2nd game, I could ONLY "SWING" it from 15 to 13. A B/G Centaur?? I should be able to use it going up 7/8 board for 3 FULL games!!! Feh!

I dont know where some of you guys bowl, but where i'm from 5-10 straight is the typical shot. Just my two cents. I dont have a ton of revs but i have more than three and 10-5 is a typical night for me and alot of other guys.

MrNattyBoh,
I'm in central NJ. Be thankful they give you that much oil.
Around here the fluffers & speed merchants rule. If they can't dump/heave a Mega-Friction type ball out to the 5 board and have it come up dead flush, they whine, b*tch and moan to the manager en masse.

With most centers that I know not oiling for Saturday youth leagues most of the younger bowlers are learning nothing but the big hook. That is where I would love the youth leagues to change it up every now and then. For a few weeks leave the shot from Friday night the way it is. For a few weeks put out a regular THS. For a few weeks put out a flatter pattern. This would help teach the kids how to adjust according to their ball movement.
I will even take it a step further even though I know it would never happen. I would love to see adult leagues do the same thing. I would love to see this done and how people would adjust. Even though I hated the shot to be different I loved it just as much due to it was making me learn every night about my game and how I adjust accordingly.

I am a medium rev/speed stroker, and I like to play it straight up the 10 board and watch it make the move at the very end. I throw a T-Road Pearl (the next step down from Duke's Hy-Road) and get a very similar reaction with the ball.
On the few occasions I get it out near the 5 (not by choice as Norm does, but by accident) the ball usually recovers nicely and hits the pocket at a sharper angle.

Kyle,
If I might, I'd love to just see them oil the outside AT ALL!
A flatter pattern would look like a reverse block to 99% of the bowlers. I wouldn't even ask for that much. I'd say what they term 8 - 10 "units" of any oil at all would have most fluffers and most crankers screaming for the oil man's genitals. Anything, just so balls don't roll out at 40 feet, without having 25 mph ball speed..

I can actually use an Avalanche Slide out there, but the key is to "kill" the hand. Norm's hand at release was OPEN and so the lane was pretty much doing ALL the work for him.
It takes a little practice, total relaxation, and a pretty tame ball, but it can be done. By the way, on the dry that's a great way to allow the ball to still hit and carry. More revs and the ball can lose lots of it's punch.
Wait until you get my age. Taking some of the hand out of the ball comes second nature... And less painful the next morning!

But, the trick is, Lane, to take the same amount of hand "out of it" every shot.

-
charlest,
You are right! It takes practice and COMPLETE TRUST that if you put "nothing" on it, that it will make a turn to the pocket.
It really doesn't require revs to speak of, just a little rotation. The temptation to grab one at the bottom will almost always result in ugly stuff at the pins. Complete trust is a must when everyone around you is cranking on it.

Thanks scotts33,
I didn't know there was a term for that shot. I just literally picture the Norm Duke "no hand" shot and it happens. That is a great description.

I agree with what has been said... You need to trust it when you throw your ball with less hand that it will make it back to the pocket. I love throwing my blue vibe right on the burn when everyone else is playing in the oil and coming in light while I'm annahilating the pocket playing the outside

there are many keys to playing strait, first of all oil is nice to have. But, you CAN get the ball down the lane farther with a flatter release and MOST importantly, you can't grab the ball. You MUST MUST have a loose grip, let the ball go and not "hit" it. If you watch Duke, you will see exactly what I mean. Also that darn Hyroad is something else, its sneaky how weak it can be and how much it can hook. A nice release with nothing much on it, it goes long and doesn't do much, you hit it and it hooks. Duke shows it, thats why he is one of the best and why we are talking about this haha. Strait can be done on house shots, if YOU can't do it, YOU can't do it. I went through 3 yrs where I couldn't do it any more, I worked on the release and voila I can go strait again on the same house that I was complaining about it in. Another part we all fail to realize is the balls these days are extremely aggressive, very few will actually "want" to go down the lane. Get a pearl, get loose and watch it happen. Once your hand gets to the hook position though, you won't do it. I struggle to go strait when I get tighter with my grip, if you just let it go, then it can go long and not terribly strong.

*slow claps* Bravo, sir. Bravo.
Same garbage here. If it's not walled up to China, people cry until it is. I prefer something a little harder. The only time I have complained about the "shot" is when they went about 6 mos. without cleaning backends/pindecks.
When I complained, the manager's response: "The oil machine does that every time it goes down the lane."
Wow. Way to run a maintenence schedule.

Norm is amazing. I watch him throw like he did today and I wonder how in the world he ever gets beat. That was a clinic.

The key to playing Duke's line is to not grab the ball on release. When you grab it on release, the ball will check on the breakpoint. If you have a clean release with no grab, then you can get the ball to be more straighter and not make such a sudden movement when it encounters friction. Another thing is the hand position. You'll notice that Duke is not cupping the ball at any point of his swing. He can control the amount of revolutions he puts on the ball by the way he positions the ball on his hand.

i need to learn how to play straight like norm. also i find it interesting how randy and everyone always talks about how versatile norm and WRW when all you see them do is go up the crack. randy would say that they would hook it all week but as soon as they make the show its up 5. i am beginning to not believe him anymore. i guess i need to go to a tour stop and watch them. during the tournament

Very well said, KWBOWLING817 !
Norm Duke is the man and that's all there is to it. He made the lanes look like child's play with his pure release and accuracy. On the 15# or 16# equipment topic, I just went up to 16# because I wanted a cleaner, smoother release and my game is much better for it.
I had the pleasure of meeting Norm Duke at the 2004 ABC Masters in Reno. Even though he didn't bowl in that event due to an injury, it was awesome to meet a legend and now a Hall of Famer!

You could also sign up for the Xtram Frame deal on the PBA's site and watch Friday night's matchplay. This week, for example, you would have seen WRW move in and start hooking it before most people. Alternatively, Fagan tried hooking it from 20 out to 8 in the first match on fresh oil and shot a 148 or so, but then moved halfway through the second match and piped it straight up the 5 board and started shooting big numbers.
And randomly, here's a video (http://"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_YWf2iMI4g") of Duke moving from outside to inside on TV, and winning. Check out 2:15 into it where they compare his outside game and his inside game. Very cool.
-
You can not underestimate how accurate Duke is, and how that gives him an advantage over the big hookers. He could have just as easy played the twig or moved inside and hooked the ball. He saw that the inside track was burned and moved outside where noone had played much. Then he threw the ball to perfection. Pure joy to watch.

I don't necessarily agree straighter is greater just to say it. Wes Malott is far from a straight player and he's still number 1 in points. There is so many factors to playing the lane with accuracy, speed, touch, timing along with how that bowler is bowling at that time. I've seen Norm Duke play straight up the boards and get destroyed. I've seen him hook the ball and win. Both of those two situations have been awhile but still. You still need a reaction and pin response playing it straight, otherwise we all would try to do that and average 250 wouldn't we?
With that said, I think if Fagan made a professional adjustment in the title match he may have won. I don't like the chances of a high rev bowler lofting it in the air and having to make big moves every frame. Though I've seen T.Jones and Smith win titles this way I've also seen players like Robert Smith loose title matches bowling like this.
However, if it works, then you can put fear in your opponent that may not be able to do that. Just like yesterday you know Fagan was feeling the heat when he knew he couldn't adjust quick enough and he does not have the talent to do what Norm Duke was doing and he knew he was in big trouble after 4 frames. If it was the opposite and Duke had little accuracy and a bad ball reaction playing straight along with bad carry and you see Fagan carrying the world with a big hook, loft and pins dancing everywhere then Duke would realize he couldn't win. But that didn't happen.
If I could do what Fagan did yesterday and what Norm did yesterday I would, but most of us cannot because we cannot mimic a professional touring bowler.
-
Kinda funny that some of the same people preaching straighter is greater are the same ones that will quickly admit their disdain for Mike Scroggins. Doesn't get much straighter than that.

i resemble that!
at my house i can play a few different lines but the most forgiving line for me is 7 board at the arrows to 4 at the break point, using my vapor zone, with little side rotation. most times i have either a board hold or a board outside to play with there. i can go 15 out to 5 with my el nino 2000 (with alot more hand) but i find less room for error.
