P o Y's ?
« on: February 12, 2007, 12:50:12 AM »
Guys,

What are our thoughts out there?  Do we think the Player of the Year is up for grabs?  Or do we think there is a frontrunner?

Does Big Wes's performances from early in the season loom large or small at this point of the year?

Does Chris Barnes's appearances warrant any consideration?

How about Jason Couch?  If not P o Y, then possibly a Comeback award?  Not that he REALLY went anywhere, but still.

I'm curious to hear your thoughts.

I think Couch is the leader by a hair. Wes appears early and fades like last year. He appears limited to certain patterns. Barnes is tight up there, bu we'll have to see where the majors go.

Good point, Inverted.  But the unfortunate timing and uncertainty of a return date from that injury....... may that poo-poo his shot at P o Y?

There are still 2 majors left this season.  A lot can happen between now and the end of the season when this is voted on.  Any talk about this now is just pure speculation.

Three majors.  The US Open, the World Championships, and the Tournament of Champions.  I don't like that they're all clustered within a month of the end of the season.  But yeah, if someone who's already got a title wins one of the majors, it'd be hard not to vote for 'em.

i don't like having three majors lumped together that closely either. since the pba takes a break for the holidays, why can't they have two majors before the christmas break and two of them after ?

POY is up for grabs by many. Jason Couch is up there but isn't the frontrunner. If Couch won next week he would be the frontrunner but he's not guaranteed anything. His first half stats are medicore.Tommy Jones and Wes Mallot are up there soley on points and consistancy.

That's pretty much the top guys. There are other guys like Sean Rash even though he's not in the top ten in points he would have to win a couple of more titles with his rate and Doug Kent and mabey Pete Weber but they would have to do something fantastic real soon. Pete Weber will not win POY if he just wins a major, he needs more appearances on tv and rounds of 8 then he is doing now. He's not even top 10 in points, so validate why he deserves anything. Titles are not everything, consistancy and points are just as big. Chris Barnes, the points leader does have an outside shot at it as well. That is why Norm Duke doesn't deserve to be POY unless he does something crazy really quick. He's missed too many tournaments. It is irrelavent what he did before his injury. The POY should be a player who attends most all the tournaments plus the other criterias.

Also, there are 3 majors coming soon. 1 win at a major is like winning 2 regular tour titles and just being able to show up on tv is nearly half as good as winning a regular tour title, which is why Patrick Allen won a couple years ago because not only did he win the World Championship but he was also on the Masters and the US Open shows.

I'm still going from my prediction from last summer and Tommy Jones will repeat as POY.

Another TJ is great rant??

Points and consistency aren't the only things that count.  If that were true or if they were the BIG thing, explain why Brad Angelo didn't win the year he was the points leader.  He was consistent, but he lacked the win on TV.

TJ is good....but there are plenty of others that are better this year.

I think Jason Couch has the best chance so far at making player of the year.  He has made the past couple of show recently, winning twice.  I think the Sean Rash has a shot too if he starts making more shows, and makes the majority of the majors.

I think you're right.  For all the folks saying that Couch had just a so-so first half, consider that when PA won, he had a so-so first half, making just one show.  Then he lit up the second half, had four shows and three wins all at the end of the year.

Just Jason showing up on this show and making it to match play last week makes him a clear frontrunner as of right now.

Let's not count out Allen either.  Two wins and some more places in the rest of the year and possibly another win if Couch doesn't.

And there's Duke, who we know will be dangerous at the end of the year.
