Author Topic: Thoughts on the Pro-Am (Read 985 times)

I was lucky enough to bowl in the Pro-Am earlier this month when the PBA was at Earl Anthony's in Dublin, CA. If you ever get a chance to do it I highly recommend it!

A few things really stood out for me which I wanted to share with my fellow bowlers:

1. I was surprised how small a lot of the PBA bowlers are. Rhino Page, Weber, even Bill O'Neill are all a lot smaller than they look on tv.

2. Most of the bowlers were super nice and took the time to sign autographs, shoot the breeze with folks at the bar, etc. Tom Smallwood seemed shocked that I asked him to sign something. Of course, some of the bowlers (who will go unnamed) were jerks.

3. The bowlers who got paired up with Brian Voss and Wes Malott were lucky, as they spent a ton of time coaching each player they were with. Voss even made diagrams for everybody he was paired with... makes me wish NextLevel Bowling would run one of their clinics with Voss and Duke out here.

4. Walter Ray's style looks weird and awkward in person, until his ball hits the pocket and then it's sweet!

the first and only time I did a Pro-am was back in 2001, was also bowling in the tournament too..

I got pair'd with Steve Jaro's, Dale Strike, and some other no name guy who shot 150!!!!!!!!

Steve Jaro's was a super nice guy, I did ask him about his 300game in the finals. I did also ask him if he felt a bit weird being that he is one of the few who has shot 300 in the finals, and that he also, holds the low score in the tv finals... He just kinda laughed about it and said it happens. I did ask it in good humor, not just being a dick...

what really made me laugh and not trying to get a big head about it, was when Jaro's was on our lanes I shot in the 230's vs his 215. Dale Strike shoots 258 and i shoot in the 220's.. the no name guy comes up and says something like yea sorry about this but i didnt get a chance to practice this afternoon.... and proceeds to shoot 150, while i shoot another 220game.

So my cousin was a down a few lanes and had George Branham III and Eugene McCune who shoot 300-279, and someone else shot like 269... He shoots like 670

and ended up taking 2nd or 3rd for a combined score lol..

Now the following year i didnt bowl in said regional tourny, but went to watch and noticed the same thing, alot of the bowlers are smaller than what they seem.. Jason Couch walked past me and i couldnt believe how short he is lol..

Who were the jerks?
