ESPN Should Fire Their Technical/Camera Crew
« on: February 17, 2008, 03:50:46 AM »
They went off air for 3 frames last game and they keep going black every few frames.  The camera angles are off.  Zooming is clearly manual.  It seems that ESPN hires the worst people or those that are willing to take the job without any qualifications.  My uncle is a movie producer and I know a lot about this stuff.  It seems the camera crews for the PBA are amateur at best.

Not for sure where you live Necromancer.  But I know Iowa is getting pounded by blizzard like conditions.  Nebraska was getting hit and I am in Wisconsin where we have had freezing rain since 2 am and now we are starting to get the snow and later will get the blizzrd like conditions also.  Not much a camera crew can do about that.

Well I'm trying to represent BallReviews.com.  Don't you find it wierd that when you are watching the PBA, ESPN technical quality always goes down from the annnouncers to the camera shots?  ESPN has millions invested in other sports and I think they send out the most incompetent people out to PBA shows.

Last I checked SDBowler, this is a bowling forum message posting site.  Sorry, that's just the way it is.

Personally I've found some of the quality of the shots lacking.  We didn't see the angle PDW took to cover the split in the 10th until the ball went into the pit.  Then got to see what happened on the replay.

Let's see there is a tour they are on tv. That's good enough for me. As a few have stated Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, and other states around here are having a huge winter storm moving across the states. Taking the weather into play I would have to say that the show was good. How many times in other sports do they say how the weather is affecting the tv pictures? I know I have heard it a lot in watching different sports on ESPN.

I am just saying it because the weather magnified the poor quality that is put into delivering PBA to the homes across the country.  ESPN HAS BEEN shortchanging the PBA with some of the crappiest camera crews the past few years.  When the PBA was on ABC back in the day, the PBA looked tight, it looked professional.  Now it seems like some reality tv cameramen are recording this crap and the show is so simple to make look good.  However, week after week it just looks like it is run by a bunch of lazy people.

I'm just telling it like it is.  I know most of you have noticed it too if you have somewhat of a memory and 20/20 vision and see what is taking place.

I'm going to email PBA.com and ask them about their broadcast issues.

ESPN isn't about to send their finest camera crews to a PBA
event when they're showing dozens of basketball games each
weekend.  Heck, ESPN wouldn't even be showing it, if the PBA
wasn't paying for it.
All of that's no ones fault except for the PBA.  There's no
way they should have to pay to get their product on television.
There's to many other sports networks now to continue putting up
with ESPN's lack of support.  We could complain to ESPN all day
long, but as long as the PBA puts up with it expect to see more
of the same.

Think about it this way. There could be no bowling on tv at all. Yeah I wish it was a better production but it is on tv. Bowling as we all know will NEVER be able to compete against college football, basketball or the NFL, NBA, or MLB. Let's be happy that it is on tv even at a lower quality.

Thanks for the explanation.  At least someone up in this piece knows what I mean.  The PBA sure did do it to themselves.  Hmm...

I am sure that the LIVE production crews make the best decisions they can, in a LIVE broadcast - they get the angles right on the replays.

Basketball - baseball -football - we don't always see EXACTLY what happened on the live shot - have to wait for the replay. Why's bowling any different?

I agree that the broadcast has had some issues - I don't think it's necessarily the quality of the people. They had weather issues today - and not even ESPN can do anything about that.

What's the harm in expressing an opinion of the quality of the broadcast?  Yeah, we're all thankful that there is PBA on TV, but that doesn't mean that the quality of everything involved in watching it can't be improved upon.  It's not like they were up against a football game that they were televising later on.  If they don't read or hear criticism, then how are they supposed to improve upon it.  Go ahead & accept mediocrity if you wish.  Some of us have seen better productions in the past.  The weather malfunction wasn't there fault, but not showing a current shot while it's happening when the feed is working?  There's no excuse for that.

No it is the camera crew.  Every week the zoom on the roll to the pins is blurred at some point.  This is a basic error done by amateur workers.  The people working clearly have no knowledge of how to professionally broadcast a bowling tournament.  It isn't like there are tons of objects getting the zoom out of focus.  It is just carelessness and laziness.  That and the director or whoever is controlling with camera is on, is terrible.  All the director does is say 'camera 1', 'camera 2', etc.  EVERY SHOW, there is some point where we are looking at the bowler way too long, or we see the ball after it hit the pins, or it shows a family member while the ball is being thrown, etc.  It really pisses me off!
