prize fund cut

I posted this earlier on the pba website

PBA ANNOUNCES 20% REDUCTION IN PRIZE FUNDS

Prize money on the Denny's PBA Tour will decline by 20 percent, PBA
Commissioner & CEO Fred Schreyer has just announced in a media conference
call that is ongoing.

"The message being sent is that the days of the open checkbook in the PBA
are over, and we have to be self-supporting," Schreyer said.

In standard Tour events, first place prize money will drop from $40,000 to
$25,000, and the guaranteed prize payoff for exempt players will drop from
$2,000 to $1,800.

Schreyer said the cuts were being made to ensure the long-term viability of
the organization.

Two of the Tour's four major tournaments, the World Championships and the
Tournament of Champions, also will see first-place reductions to $50,000
and $60,000, respectively.

Schreyer added that the PBA hopes to save additional money once
negotiations begin with ESPN regarding the Tour's next contact with that
network. He said cutting TV production costs also could benefit the
organization's bottom line, adding that the 2007-08 season could mark the
first season of profitability under the ownership group that took over
seven years ago.

Schreyer said the announced cuts do not extend to either the PBA Senior
Tour or the PBA's Regional program.

I believe the large registration fee compared to the business increase is small for potential sponsors so that list is dwindling. Heck major ball suppliers have backed out on full registration.  I believe this tone has changed from revival and trying to gain respect to ownership timeline with profitable outcome. Which may or may not have sellable overtones to it.  We all still forget this is a business and a "TV show" and when ratings make something unprofitable they go away. Yes many things are unfair which most people above have stated but at least they are taking steps and not suprising anyone like the PWBA got.

Maybe if they move all operations to Mexico like Brunswick did and have Telemundo telivise the events they might save some money.

One night we were bowling league. One of my teammates makes a great shot, but the 8 never wiggles. "This moment brought to you by KY jelly" was my friends comment back at the table. We all busted a gut at this. Maybe that's what the PBA needs.

Time for all the bowling ball manufacturers to pony up. The PBA tour is advertising for them. They should funnel some of the profits from the "ball-of-the-week" back into the game. There are enough manufacturers to sponsor the majority of the tour stops. Why won't they step up to the plate?

I think they should open the field also. But if they would lower there registration fee to ball companies there would be more companies on bored. Plus they need to get rid of the $200,000 motel 6 shot out at the end of the season and the best ball during christmas break. Those are junk and use that money for other stops
