Why don't more people play Norm Duke's line?
« on: December 17, 2006, 08:01:15 AM »
I used a line like his in a tourney this weekend with great success.  It just seems like such a great, consistent look.  Why does everyone seem to want to overpower the lanes?  I think I'm going to work on that 5 board and out, soft hand line!

Mr. Lebowski, this is Bill Salnicker with the Southern Cal Bowling League, and I just got a, an informal report, that a member of your team, uh, Walter Sobchak, drew a firearm during league play. If this is true of course, it contravenes a number of the league's by-laws, and article 27 of the league...

BOB:  Did you see the way she was lookin' at me?
DOUG:  Yeah, because she thought you were some kind of freak!

One of the problems with those lines is that the average house shot does not allow for them. If I tried to play where Norm was playing, my ball would read the dry at 10 fee and go hunting for the Brooklyn side.

The other problem is that many people just aren't that good at mastering hand positions like that. I've tried practicing what Norm has done, because I like the idea of being able to get at the pocket on any condition like he can. Unfortunately, I don't yet have the consistency to get the ball on line with the right amount of hand from there. I either lay off too much or I grab it too early; it's hard to find that happy medium. You have to remember that we're seeing that line at its best. Most Joe Schmoe league bowlers will not be nearly as proficient from there.

up the ten is a nice walk for me, even tho i am a cranker, like i said i practice this quite often.  on the other hand the 5 board and out is the toughie, being able to take all your hand out and get it to the hole is the goal, and like i said i suck at it, but when i can get myself out over the 5 board, it works pretty darn well.

I actually practice with 5 different lines with 4 balls on saturday mornings, ball 1 is plastic up the ten, ball two is my cherry c/s over 5th arrow, ball three is hrg over 4th arrow, and ball 4 is my tsunmai over 3rd arrow, the 3 reactive balls all play a different break point.  then on the 5th shot i will grab any of the reactive balls, take my hand out and play up the 5 board (I will alternate the 3 reactive balls, different drillings and they all start up different, good speed training) and my goal is to leave a makebale spare or carry the rack. saturday morning, i threw 16-18 strikes with this method, makes for a great practice set, keeps your mind working

I watched the show in total amazement.  Could no one see what Duke was doing?  Or were none of the other 4 able to play that shot?  Seems to me that a very good bowler, when seeing another very good bowler getting a reaction with a line other than theirs, they just might give it a try.  Duke deserved to win, not one of the other 4 even came close.  Had even one of them tried outside it might have been different, but......

(Btw, when I can I love that up the outside shot.  Rarely seen in today's environment.)

Didn't Ryan Shafer go to that approximate line on the right lane.
Strike once and then get his nasty 7 10 split.

I thought he did a good job...his usual not so hot luck.

I don’t think many understand just how well Norm was in control of his game.

He has such soft hands at the bottom and seldom ever grabs at the ball. Sure death if you were playing the shot he was playing on that pattern.

The only other player out there I know of with that soft of a release is Patrick Healy.

Schafer did try to square up but he doesn’t have the soft release. He had to go with extreme speed to make the ball hold the line.

Ryan gave it a noble effort but any variation of turn, speed, or line was going to cost him.

With his extremely soft and low tilt release Norm had a little more room for error.

I resemble that remark Gene!!!! I think Norm could have jumped in if he had to with th Fired Up,but I'm glad he stayed out it made for a more interesting show.

I thought if Norm needed to go in it looked like his choice was going to be a Thunderstruck pearl.

Also...I believe the big factor Norm had in his favor for the TV shot was tons of time to PREP the line versus the normal weeks routine and what can be done during the week.  I HATE This practice!  I know it is done by many now!

In addition the TV lights speed this practice....

It is a shame the tour has not figured out how to stop this prevalent practice.

PB,

You are so right and the pathetic thing is that league hacks like me will never understand because on the THS crap most of us bowl on it's ALL masked.

The thing about Norm and WRW is that they can stay in the same zone longer than most due to the different types of adjustments they make.  (speed, hand position, etc.)  Norm basically stayed in the same zone the whole show and just amped up the speed a little bit when the lanes broke down.  He may have moved a few boards with his feet and target, but not many.
