Game Day Thread - Chicago Open
« on: November 07, 2004, 03:32:25 AM »
My thoughts on the first match.. Both players bowled really well. I can't believe Brian Voss carried so many of his off hits though while Chris Johnson got tapped pretty bad a few times. Looked like playing two lines using two different balls was throwing him off. Looked like he was using the X-Factor Ace on the left lane, not really sure what he was using on the right.

Taps???
you've got to be kidding?
Is every ball one that hits the 1 and the 3 pin a graet ball that deserves a strike?
The 4 pin leave is not a tap.
The 7 pin where he shoudl have left a 7-10 and pins rolling around happen to knock over the 10 pin is NOT a tap.

charlest chill the hell out dude. If you had gotten the POINT of my statement it's comparing CJ's hits with Brian Voss's. You think Brian Voss deserved all of his strikes? NO.

Himmler and Voss in the final. I gotta go with Himmler.

Nope, Voss was much more accurate, but accuracy's not what you commented upon. I have to go by your words, not read your mind. CJ did not get tapped. Steelsmith got tapped with those 2 10 pins.

Nice game for the Chief. He really bowled well in that last game.

Last comment on that CJ/Voss first match. While CJ's shots were off, other than the 4 pin, the others could have easily carried. He had higher speed and higher entry angle. One would think his carry would be better. I was wondering when Voss would start leaving flat 10's and that happened in that last game.

Speaking of flat tens.......
Did anyone besides me catch Randy Pederson's comment in the last game that " leaving flat tens in a match that tight is almost like questioning your manhood."
 What is that??????????????

For all the comparisons of this one vs that one, there was hardly a bad ball thrown for 6 games/3 matches. Yes, some balls were better than others. My only comments were with respect to splitting hairs, which I feel one must do when bowlers of this caliber are on TV and those bowlers are as "on" as this group were.

Every ball thrown in those 6 games had the potentiality to be a strike with some luck.  If any one of us were to throw such balls each time, it would not be unrealistic in today's game to expect strikes each time. We should recognize a certain degree of luck, but with today's balls and today's revs, strikes are expected.

The Manhood comment - it's a macho thing in bowling to be able to sling messengers around to take out the flat 10's. The younger stronger players with higher speed, rev-rate, and thus higher entry angle are not as prone to the flat 10. When they hit flat, more likely than not a messenger will coming flying across to take it out. These types of strikes are crowd pleasers, just like home runs in baseball. You can nickel and dime your way to wins in a baseball game, but it's the home run ball that the fans seem to love. The more traditional players (strokers &  tweeners) will leave more flat 10's than the power players. The Strokers and Tweeners will trip more 4's, and leave less 8 pin & 9 pin taps, so overall the carry percentage is similar. BUT, from a fan standpoint and a "macho" standpoint, the flying messengers are more manly & macho. Remember, in today's world, and ounce of appearance is worth a pound of performance.

Also, remember when Himmler threw th 8-10 on his last ball he said, "Did he throw his purse at that one?". He better hope Michelle Feldman does'nt show up and whoop his ass!
