Gifting bowlers exemptions
« on: April 07, 2009, 10:21:16 PM »
Does no one think this is outrageous or bad? When Belmo was gifted two commissioners exemptions earlier in the year there was a huge outcry people were going crazy. The PBA is trying give him an exemption its unfair to the bowlers who are bowling week in an out for points.  If Belmo hadn't of won an came in 37th an was given an exemption would everyone be ok with the PBA ignoring the rules they set out with an have been using all year? You could say he only bowled half the events an made 80,000 points the next guy above him made 97,000 in 19 events he belongs out there hes good for the sport its just unfair for him since he lives in Europe so far away.

Where would you draw a line? All sorts of situations can be made does no one have a problem now with the PBA not going by its rules? Where was the gifted exemption for Paul Flemming when he missed the number that year? What PBA do you like "bowl follow the rules gain an exemption" or "just bowl an unwrap"?

I prefer they follow the rules. However, Belmo could mean ratings, which would be good for the PBA. So from a business standpoint, it might work well for them. He has generated some talk. For example, I have a guy at work who said, "hey, do you know about that guy that throws with two hands?" This guy is a bowler on occasion but not someone to watch the show on Sundays. The PBA is in business to make money and they will do what they need to for that to happen. I would get used to rules being "bent" in the future, especially when some new talent will get the PBA all kinds of press. Plus there is always the chance one of those commissioners exceptions could be used to let you bowl. Would this be a bad thing?

See my post in the other thread going on about Edwards backing into exemptions---the PBA does what they think they have to do on a case by case basis.

the commissioner's exemption is soley at the discretion of the commish.  the tourny that belmo did win was one he qualified via the TQR, no commish exemption.  therefore he is exempt on his talent not gifts.  as for edwards/sterner, edwards' wasn't gifted, he was there when he needed to be there.  yeah i know he was working, and that led to sterner's gifted exemption.  would have edwards been there if he wasnt working?  unless he knew that rule, no.  and if he did know the rule, and stayed there because of that rule, too bad so sad mr sterner.  in the end, it probably was right to let sterner in...

In such an extreme hypothetical, yeah I would. But, since they are giving international exemptions for next year, he would probably have received one of those anyway.

It all depends, was Belmo inside the cut line and then knocked out because of a crap rule or was he just outside the cut line by one spot.

Even worse, when I logged into today on pba.com, it asked me to make my vote for rookie of the year and, of course, belmo was on top, and they just put the stats to make it sound like he should be rookie of the year.  I, personally, looked at the stats a little more and felt Terrence Reeves deserved the honor a bit more, so my vote was for him.
