who lost their exemption?
« on: March 27, 2008, 03:19:54 PM »
Since this is the final event, does anyone know who has lost their exemption?  I think the cut line is 38th, since Baker/Kent are out of the top 40 but have multi year exemptions.  Right now Russell is on the cut line with Oatman/Wollenbecker/Kalfas/Himmler still alive in the tourney.  It would be a shame if Russell lost his exemption because of Ciccone's mistakes on TV.

what it looks like right now is that oatman will jump ronnie and dino, simard locks himself in by making the cut.. doug kent can probably make a jump in points by making the show which will move the cutline down to 39. But with Kalfas and Wollenbecker in the field, that possibly will move Ronnie down to 40th instead of 39th..that's looking like best case scenario which is worst case for him..

I want to feel for Ronnie as it comes down to this final week and he was so close to the cut. But at the same time, you have to tell yourself that if you were out there, do you blame your lost of exemption on one partner's mistake on one tv show, or any of your mistakes throughout the season..

Dino made the cut.  He is in the top 30 i think.  So he should be safe.

Just like it's a shame when your team loses a league game because your anchor whiffed a dime in the 10th frame??

Win as a team, lose as a team in that case. Also, as ACTS pointed out, there were 21 (I think?) other events where Russell could have improved his standing. Please don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking Russell by any means. The guy's a great talent!

If Ronnie Russell loses his exemption, it's because he didn't have enough points, not because of Ciccone's whiff.  If he wanted to be exempt next year, he'd've finished higher in a few tournaments.  I'm sure he missed more than a few spares to miss the cut by only a few pins or to lose that seventh match game.

Joey's right, when it's a team game, you win and lose as a team.  Unless someone throws it in the gutter, then it's their fscking fault.

I agree. Its definately a team thing, but a gutter ball is nobodies fault but your own.

I agree that Russell could have done more to secure an exemption.  However, Joe Ciccone DID cost him a title and a guaranteed one year exemption by his performance in the 10th frame of that game.  You can't deny that.

I am the anchor on my team for league.  If I miss a 10 pin in the 10th and we lose, it's my fault.  I don't care if I still bowl a 250 and my teammate bowled a 150.  If I miss in the 10th with a chance to win/tie, I take the full blame.  As the anchor its your job to finish games.

To shelley....I think whiffing a two pin spare is pretty close to throwing one in the gutter.

While your teammate was bowling that 150, it's almost a certainty that he missed a spare or two.. Maybe he should have made adjustments and didn't catch the transition, who knows? Conversely, should he now blame you? I mean, if you're the anchor than you should be able to help your other teammates too, right? Come on now..

For the record, Joe Ciccone did cost HIMSELF a title and a guaranteed exemption as well.. Surely he feels that for himself and his partner.

My mother always said that you can't blame either yourself or a teammate unless the other one was perfect. In other words, IF AND ONLY IF I shoot 300 can I blame a teammate for not getting enough to win.

Maybe Russell should blame himself for saying "make this the best shot of your life" to Ciccone.

There were two ways to earn an exemption for next year, points and titles.  Not everyone can do it with a title.  He missed the title, granted, but he had 19 other tournaments he could have bowled better in.  Making one cut might've gotten him the points he would have needed.

The fact of the matter is, for every person out there who says "Ronnie's got such a great game, I can't believe he missed the cut line", there are 50 others who say "$NOTRONNIE has such a great game, I can't believe he hasn't won 95 titles already".  They've all got the physical talent, and when there are only so many exempt spots available, you gotta prune them somehow.

No one deserves an exemption, they are earned.  Ronnie earned his this year (if you believe that competing in a single one-week tournament is "earning" it), he did not earn it for next year.  Someone else did better, they earned it.
