Give the guy a break, he even said himself that he needed to learn the lingo.

Still, he needs to go. You wouldn't put Michael Jordan on commentary for Tennis. Just like you shouldn't put a guy ignorant to bowling on a bowling telecast. His jokes were horrible and boarder line offensive. Next time ill just hit mute.

I can't excuse a so called professional anouncer not to be prepared for a job. Bowling is not that difficult to learn. He should know what a turkey is. I can excuse him if he doesn't know what a lilly is but not a turkey. This is basic everyday bowling lingo. He should have learned the lingo. There is no excuse not to be prepared. He had plenty of time to learn.

100% in agreement. When you take on a job like that you do the homework and prep yourself for a few weeks. This is inexcusable. Randy must be embarrassed as hell to be live on the air with this schmuck.

I thought that Stone was absolutely hilarious, and I would pick Stone to be on the telecast over Dave Ryan anyday.

I don't think you get it.  Randy is the expert.  They hired Stone because he can play the role of "the idiot" (the person being exposed to the sport) make light of things (he knows what a turkey is...it's an act and Randy is a foil for him) and be more comedian than anything.  He can lighten up a fairly dry, bland sport.  That's the idea anyways.

So the idea is Stone kind of brings up questions as things happen and Randy answers them.  Bowling is a lot more esoteric than you think.  We take everything we know for granted.  People don't know what an oil pattern is or what a reactive resin ball is.  Plenty of people in leagues don't even know these terms.  More than half the people in a league I'm in don't know these things.  They just bowl, many with a house ball...some with a lower end ball they bought.  They hook it with poor technique, etc.  They do it because it's fun.

Trust me, Stone knows what he's doing.  It's TV, it's an act.  Everything is very deliberate and planned.  They aren't just going to throw some guy out there.  He understands the game at a level necessary to know when to ask "stupid" questions about thing to set Randy up and then to bounce off Randy again with witty one liners and jokes to keep the broadcast fresh.

PBA doesn't have the same luxuries as many other sports that maintain a very large audience that is generally knowledgeable about the sport.

I remember many poker telecasts where they spent a lot of time explaining things and one announcer would be the expert while the other one would ask, to people who understand poker well, stupid questions or make stupid observations.  But in the process they educated a lot of people who were watching in passing.  And once people understand what they're watching it becomes a lot more entertaining.

Figure out a good way to explain a sport to your wife and be surprised when she actually enjoys watching it with you.

It's a decent experiment they're making here.  If it fails, whatever.  They're not going to lose the 84 people in the USA who watch the PBA over the NFL.  I DVR it myself and watch it later on, skipping the ads.  They need a better time slot/

Do we really need 15 separate topics on whether we like the new guy or not?

While he is a newbie, he's already way ahead of Ryan's development.  He can already name pins better than Ryan, is learning the terminology, and can add up scores.  Ryan still can't do those things after several years.

After 2 weeks, I have to agree.  My wife, who isn't a bowler knows what a turkey is.  Am I a fan of it?  I'm not sure yet - I need to give it a little more time I suppose.

Amen on the time slot.  It's a terrible time to show bowling.  ESPN also has to cater to those that might not as knowledgeable as we (here on the boards) are.  I can ignore Stone out if I have to.  I'm just tired of hearing "60 feet to success".  It makes me cringe every time i hear it.

It's interesting how ESPN assigns broadcasters.

I've never seen Stone doing a soccer game but I bet he knew more about the game at least I would hope so.  Anybody seen Stone doing a soccer game?  Does he know the game?

Ryan is an OK hockey announcer that's a lot fo what he does 2nd tier games.

Brad Daughtery <sp?> ya know the ex-NC star in  college and NBA player.  They assigned him to Nascar.  You can tell this guy has been a Nascar fan for years and even though he's a b-ball star...he knows Nascar.  He was on ABC yesterday so he's part of the ESPN line-up.

How come ESPN can do relatively well on assigning Nascar and most other sports and they can't figure out how to do bowling?

I also think PBA has told them to juice up the show. They <PBA> want the show to be more like an entertainment thingy than what purists want.....ie. trick shot stuff.

BTW...this network <ESPN> also carries professional eating contests on a sports orientated network.  What's up with that?  Pool....ya I can see it but an eating contest....OMG???   Nathan's hot dogs must be a big time sponsor.  I really want to see some doofus stuff 50 hot dogs down his gullet.  Yuck!!!

Note: Norman Chad is a HUGE bowling fan

Now he <Chad~ESPN Classic movies Sunday night and WSOP> would be funny along with Jeff Cesario <sp?> the comedian who can do a great Harry Carey.

I think you mean John Camponera. I've never heard Jeff Cesario do Harry Carey.
