PBA...Why no HD???

Man I hate this...just about every other sport has made the jump...why not the PBA?  I hate having to zoom in on the picture to fill my screen or look at those ugly bars on the side of the picture....GIVE ME HD!!!!

Also, in my home area I can't create a series recording for just the PBA shows.  Anyone else have this problem?  I subscribe to Cable One.

HD is expensive.  Very expensive It's the same reason other niche sports aren't on in HD unless Mark Cuban decides to foot the bill because HDNet desperately needs programming.

Is that because it's listed simply as "Bowling" in your cable guide? I have the same problem with Comcast.

I have a question about the expense.  Why is it so expensive?  You all ready have the eqyuipment, ESPN has been using it all year with baseball,  It cost no more to broadcast then regular TV, spectrum is allready yours.  what is the additional expense?

That was my thought as well Phoneman.  I mean even WSOP is in HD....POKER!!! I don't need to see the river card in HD! People who haven't really experienced HD probabally don't understand my gripes...but those of us that have crossed to the light side know the pains of looking backwards...LOL

My parents bought an HDTV when I left for college. I went home for fall break, and watched all my football games in HD.

Needless to say, I miss it. It's just so much better looking. The colors are vibrant and you can see everything. It's really no comparison. But alas, I must wait until next year when I can move offgrounds and actually have room in a house...

Being someone that has viewed very little of HD programming I wonder if the PBA, or bowling in general, will be improved because of HD. I am not a hockey junkie, but of all the sports, it looks the best in HD. BUT I still wouldn't watch regular season games, for the most part, because of HD. The same for a non bowling junkie. Bowling in HD may look fantastic. The question is will HD bring additional viewers to watch bowling. I doubt it. And if it doesn't bring additional viewers you can't justify having the PBA in HD, with the extra cost associated.

As far as the cost. Unless I'm wrong I thought the PBA used there own production crew and equipment and not ESPN.

Is it not in HD?  I am getting it on ESPN HD and it is in 720P.  Yes I do have to zoom it in but it looks better than the regular ESPN channel at 480i.

You can watch non-HD programming on the HD feed and it WILL look better than the basic channel feed -- there's more information being transmitted for the picture compared to the regular feed.  However, the original tape itself is not in high definition.  Some other sports on ESPN still aren't in high definition, such as boxing, Champ Car racing, and other niche sports.  While ESPN has the HD cameras readily available, there is still a high cost in operating them and providing an actual HD feed, etc.  That's why you still see a handful of NFL/MLB/etc. games filmed in standard definition even though most are in HD now.

Fluff, I think that it depends on your provider.  My brother has Fios and the normal channels look a lot better than mine(comcast)  It also automatically zooms in to fit the screen.  But there is no substitute for the real deal.  And to answer MAJM, I think that it would increase the viewers, although not by a lot.  I know I find myself searching through the HD channels just to watch HD.  I mean I just watched Discovery Channel yesterday, they had a show about moles.  Now I really don't care for the animal but the crispness of the picture was mezmerising.  So there is an example of ratings that weren't due to the nature of the prgramming but rather the presentation.

Dan you again used the statement that the high cost to operator the cameras and provide the feed is why it is not done.  What additional costs are involved?  Why is an HD camera more expensive to operate than a non HD camera?  You are using the same amount of bandwidth to get the non HD signal back to Bristol as you would for an HD signal.  Maybe less because it is digital but you allready own the satalite frequencies on the uplink and downlink side from the remote trucks. I am still looking for a resonable answer as to why it costs more?

I don't know the behind-the-scenes on television.  That's just the answer I've always gotten whenever I asked why something wasn't in HD.  It just costs more to do period, even if you have the equipment.
