Max Bob's Back-Up Ball
« on: January 22, 2006, 04:14:30 AM »
After watching Robert Smith's skills challenge back up ball shots.  I think, he should throw it for regular competition on the tour when the left side of the lane is better than the right.

If i remember right, he had the lead and lost it, and switched to his backup ball, and went like +280 for 8 or somethin like that.  Ended up winning.

Seventh.  In Japan, that's the TV show, I believe.  If I remember right, he only did it during qualifying, not throughout the whole tournament.

Shelly your correct, here is off of his website.

"Unfortunately PDW was coming off an injury, and had to throw 14 lb equipment. He struggled and missed the cut. But he didnt bowl too bad. As for me. I will say that it was the most interesting tourny for me. 12 gms qualifying, where they cut to the top 36. then 6 more and cut to 12. So with that, after 7 games I was sitting in second and doing well. Then games 8-9 were 170-160, with game 10 being 52 in the 4th frame. I was dying. o*nly 30 in the cut and no shot at all. So I looked around, and saw the left was playing well, so I threw backup balls. shot 187, good bail out. the 247-209 to finish the round. I qualify 14th, with 6 to go.

Now, with the 5 minutes practice, I looked for a 'normal' shot, but found that I had no idea what pair to pair was gonna be. So I went right back to the backup ball. proceeding to go +135 for the final 6 and take the 8th spot. I am telling you, I have never bowled a tourny where half my games were backups. I am still laughing at myself.

Now with the top 12 in round robin, I felt that this was where I was gonna make my run. And I did. coming out with 277, and games 228-248 for the next 8, I ran to the lead after 4 and never looked back. Remind you that I am bowling 'normal' again. The backup ball had no chance to win, but it definitly served its purpose. "
