The PBA Needs To Be More Dark & Mean
« on: October 24, 2008, 12:37:57 AM »
I saw PBA's commercial yesterday advertising this week's tournament with Norm Duke wearing something from the 1960's as a hippie with dreadlocks and throwing a ball equally nostalgic.

The PBA should follow the NFL with commercials like Under Armour (we must protect this house), or commercials that show LT running through a team at night.  Every commercial the PBA puts out seems like the actors and possibly the film crew don't take bowling seriously as a product.  Every commercial or ad it seems only highlights and further cements bowling as a sport by dorks and boring people.

Hell, even parody themes from old Good, Bad, and the Ugly movies and just show their eyes in a sequence that is similar to something manly in film like Clint Eastwood.  Or parody Terminator or something.  These lame commercials that almost poke fun of how lame and dorky the sport's athletes are just make me mad.

Also, bowlers like Danny Wiseman with his flaming shirts (good bowler and like him a lot), doesn't help either.

Necro,

Getting old is NOT a crushing experience, it's actually fun if one accepts the inevitable changes that come with the territory.

Incidentally, if one stays in relative shape (spiritually, emotionally, and physically), quality of life can be achieved even as the old shell and its interiors begin to erode.

Of vital importance also, is to have true friends and close family members that truly care about you, and vice-versa.

So, relax and stop worrying about trivial stuff.

Back to the original topic, I do think that the PBA should make some "serious" commercials to advertise the game. I do think that most of their comedic commercials are funny though. But to think about it, most of the USBC-ran events (Women's US Open, Open Championships, etc.) commercials are usually more on the fierce and serious side, and is that really changing any of the viewer's minds on wanting to watch it or not?

The look and target audience needs a change and I kinda agree...to an extent

Since pro bowling is geared toward middle age and older men, I can see why PBA enforces the dress code the way they do. Middle aged and older men do not wanna see bowlers with individualism and flash putting on a show, they wanna see the "bowling" and the "playing the lane" stuff.

Theres nothing wrong with that, but we gotta agree its 2008 and styles and individualism are a big part of sports...and that attracts fans.

The "new age" does not want a boring sport where every looks and acts the same and the can't really interact with the game at all.

Look at how Randy Pederson threw a fit and yelled at a fan when he didnt strike against Norm Duke a few years ago. That kinda crybaby attitude is not going to help bring in fans...
