HAMBONE
« on: January 30, 2008, 06:18:06 AM »
You might be a redneck if you think a 4 bagger is a hambone.  This description is not only degrading to the sport of bowling but it is also embarrassing to see fans in the crowd holding up "Hambone" signs just so they will be seen on TV.  You and that so called announcer has set the sport of bowling back 50 years. I have to admit I was disappointed in Randy when he described a 4 bagger last Sunday as a Hambone to those who are new to the sport of bowling.  Real PBA fans unite and start watching the show with the mute on!

Why are you taking this so serious its just for entertainment. Its gets the people excited so do it. The more people that watch to see and shout HAMBONE the more bowling will be on tv. Its always something new you guys find to complain about. Its bowling you guys are whinning like nfl players expecting more than what its worth. Just be happy it has a slot and not just broadcasted over youtube.

most professional sports have solid, professional, commentators who know what they are talking about. randy pedersen does know about pba bowling. his broadcast partner however is inexperienced and not that professional is his manner. pedersen could use a little help here as well. pba and espn.......please find a way to bring back marshall holman and mike durbin.

Nelson Burton JR. put him and Mike Durbin in the booth together, or wait someone has to do color commentary

Most professional sports move metric assloads of money, too.  Bowling doesn't.  You can't compare major sports like football, baseball, basketball, or even hockey to a second- or third-rate sport like bowling.  There simply isn't the money or incentive to put really knowledgeable commentators on.

Please, can we get an "OOOOOOOOOHHHH!!!" every time someone gets tapped?  Marshall Holman seemed ok, but Mike Durbin was hardly a solid, professional commentator, not when he was doing play-by-play.

Explain to me how using the "Hambone" for a four bagger has set back bowling 50 years!
Please explain to me how watching the show with the volume muted will make a statement!

You have to turn the mute on so you can't hear it, then you close your eyes so you can't see the hambone signs.  lol.

I haven't seen bowling on ESPN in a while, so i'm just happy that it's on again!

So was "Brooklyn" always a wrong-side strike, double pinochle always the 4-6-7-10 split, or turkey three strikes from the get-go? Of course not. "Brooklyn" was once someone's "hambone."

Sports change, every one of them. You can't show me one that hasn't.

How did he come up with "hambone"? I didn't see the first time he used it, did he just randomly pick a word?

I figured alot more people would know what "hambone" is slang for.  I think that's why a lot of people think it's inappropriate.  He could call a 4 bagger a raging boner for all I care...

I am going to e-mail Rob Stone to see if wants to use pentagon or pentagram instead of the five bagger term. They sound more educational.
