Earl's Son Speaks Out
« on: February 12, 2005, 04:04:01 AM »
Anyone else noticed this thread on the PBA forum?

http://forum.pba.com/ultimatebb.cgi?/ubb/get_topic/f/26/t/001272/p/1.html

I wasn't aware that Earl's two Master's titles were not counted as PBA titles, and that he therefore has 43 titles, not 41.

WRW's Master's title, which he won after the new PBA took over running the Master's, is included in his current total of 40 titles.

Mike Anthony has asked the PBA to consider this fact.  Apparently, Steve Miller told him that the PBA will come to a decision about this, and make a public announcement.

Interesting stuff, yes?

The PBA’s position is not an attack on Earl Anthony personally. They do not recognize any of the Masters titles that were won before a certain date. I’m not sure when that date was but I believe it is 1989.

I know if you look at the Rick Steelsmith’s bio on the site he doesn’t get credit for his as well.

I agree in that everyone who won a Masters should be credited with a PBA title.

I would also say that anyone who won a BPAA all star title (fore runner of the US Open) should probably have a PBA title as well.

Both Steelsmith and Jason Queen have won the Masters and are not credited with it. Both were not PBA members when they won.

That's pretty interesting but how can you count them as titles now when everytime Walter Ray makes a show almost everybody gets 41 signs to wave in the crowd. The PBA has been hyping this since William's won his 40th. I don't think you can change the rule now. What if Williams had won last week and tied the record? do you think they would even consider giving Anthony 2 more titles. I doubt it. It's unfortunate that those titles weren't counted among Anthony's total but to give him credit for them now would be unfair to Williams.

We all know that the current PBA is "never wrong" - even when they are. What's to discuss???

AH the PGA has the same problem!!

Bobby Jones won 13 majors(most were amateur only events).
Then it was stated Jack Nicklaus won 18 majors but this only counts his pro majors and not his two US amateurs!  So 20 majors for Jack or WAIT... is it 18?

NOw Tiger Woods they say has 8 or wait maybe 10!  I just don't know but that is only professional majors now then Tiger has 6 USGA Amateur championships.  So therefore he already has 14!  Oh wait only 3 were adult USGA Amateur championships so he definitly has 11.  Oh wait but his other 3 titles were USGA Junior championships.  Well given that he DEFINITly has still only 11 titles.

Oh wait I mean 8 er.... I mean 11, no.... ONLY 8!

A drat... Quite a few!

Kind of a related topic, i.e WRW v. Earl as best ever.
Earl has been my bowling idol forever. I'm not a lefty, and I'm old enough to have seen them both a lot. For Earl to win that many titles in a relatively short time, the legendary stuff like being only lefty to make top 32 and go on to win, a very simple, accuracy/timing based game, unbelievable match play record, etc. But, when they show the WRW highlights from '80's to present, urethane to mild resin to particle, different lines and releases, and factoring in better competition, I now give WRW the nod. Also, WRW has as many second places as firsts. Absolutely no knock on Earl, but he didn't have to adjust as much as WRW. He could do what he did with rubber, plastic, urethane and on any lane surface and oil. He was simply the best at doing what he did (excluding guys that came before him like Carter, Weber, etc as I didn't see them in their prime). I'm sure in his prime Earl could have done what was necessary to compete and thrive in the resin/particle/synthetic era, but we'll never really know. WRW has lived, thrived and dominated thru the biggest changes in the sport, the last 20 years. Truly, absolutely remarkable!

To clarify the date issues that have been mentioned

http://www.pba.com/news/default.asp?ID=3693

1970 is when the US Open started counting as a PBA title, and ABC was 98
