Horrible announcing
« on: December 06, 2003, 09:15:04 PM »
Is it me or does it seem the guy doing the announcing opposite of Randy Pederson knows pretty much nothing about bowling?

True, but it's by design.

Dave Ryan has managed to memorize the numbers of the pins, but that's all he knows about bowling.

The last time Mika was on the show, Ryan asked him if he learned anything about the lanes by watching a lefty bowl in the previous match.  Funny stuff!

I agree bring back Bo Burton and Chris.  Those are the only 2 you need.  There were awesome for ABC.

I don't know why everbody's on Dave Ryan.

Chris Shenkel knew nothing about bowling.

Now Dave Ryan is trying to know a little something and was tested with a lot of other guys before him with Randy Pederson.
I personally liked the guy right before Dave Ryan but I think Dave is just fine as a color man(and it's obvious he's trying), Randy Pederson is a lot of fun!

Leslie Gudal needs to be shown after every frame!

REgards,

Luckylefty
PS and the lead in would say, and Leslie says"that was another nice frame Mika".

Are you people talking about the same Nelson Burton, Jr. and Chris Schenkle that I have on tape from the 90's?  Man, I almost have to hit the mute button every time I go back and watch those tapes.  Bo would always call for high scoring conditions and was usually wrong.  Chris Schenkle always said "powerful strike" every time someone knocked down all 10, no matter what it looked like.

I should play a couple of the matches I have on hand and write down excerpts of their incredibly stupid displays of bowling announcing.

Mike Durbin and Denny Schriener had the greatest degree of decent analysis I ever saw on televised bowling.  They would talk about the bowlers and their adjustments, their approach, and other relevant details.  Often Denny would ask a question and Mike would respond from the angle of the experienced pro.  One of my favorite tapes is PDW's win at the LaMode Classic back in the early 90's with Mike & Denny.

And Durbin's "Average Builders" was actually helpful, vs. Bo Burton always starting his bowling tips with, "As we get older..."  Did he think the only people who watched bowling on TV were a bunch of old farts who were concerned with how to keep their arthritic hands comfortable while bowling??

As for Randy and the other dink whose name I don't know, once again, the mute button is looking awful tempting.

For PBA announcers, I'd nominate Jesse the Body Ventura and Steven Wright.  Neither of them may know anything about bowling, but they'd be entertaining.

For the women's tour, if it is ever resurrected, I'd nominate Bill Clinton and Hugh Heffner for the same reason.

Yeah, that really cracked me up.  I mean, was he reading off a teleprompter?  How else could he mispronounce the name of a guy he's bowled with for 20 years?  In print, the name does look like "pedd-er-son".

And forget about pronouncing "Guccione"!  He sounded like the senator from Nevada pronouncing "Corleone".

Voss was so bad on that broadcast... I don't know why so many people can't stand Pedersen, he's far and away the best of the four they auditioned for the spot.  Yeah, he talks a bit too much, but at least you don't fall asleep listening to him, and some of the stuff he comes up with is just downright funny!

Yes we need to bring back Denny from the golf channel.  I one heard Schenkel say solid 6 after a right hander crossed over.  Chris had the classic voice though, Ryan is just too conspiuous.
