Title: I feel bad for daugherty
Post by: Mr Hurt24 on January 22, 2011, 04:20:11 AM
Man he is looking bad on T.V but I wouldnt be in his shoes either. That much pressure to perform in that setting with that much money and the title of being The TOC champion is nerve crazy!!! His performance today doesnt reflect how well he bowled throughout the week..

The funny thing is, if it were Barnes, who bowls well every week, he would be a choker.  Lame.

Karma happened on the show today...that 100 couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.

Yeah I felt bad for him also, Even it was Barnes you couldnt call that a choke, for it to be a choke you gotta be in position to win the match and Tom was never in position to win the match.

As far as Barners goes, It is easy for the house mouse to call him a choker, the house mouse has never throwen a shot for a large sum of money, The house mouse has never had to win multiple matches just to make it to the finals. As Chris dropped some he should have won? yes. So has Brett Farve, and Tiger Woods.

Having watched the entire week on xtra frame I also feel bad for Daugerty.  He had a great week and it was unfortunate that it ended in the worst possible way.

I feel for him also.  Imagine being  him going back to his Pro Shop and leagues ?  Its going to be tough ! I think it will be a long time for him to recover.

He did bowl well all week, I think the 50k will ease the pain of shooting that game on TV.

HOW CAN ANYONE FEEL BAD for this guy he just won 50,000 for looking like a turd on national TV.  The PBA is a Joke and will be until some skill is put back into bowling.  From the way this looks to me it looks like the BMOC@ his home lanes (Daugherty) got his nose rubbed in poo by Mika (a REAL player).  What everyone always said would happen happened, the everyday league bowler got his Arse handed to him by a PBA professional, that it happened on TV is all the better.

And what you forget is that they didn't just draw four raffle tickets and the four winners got to be on the telecast. They bowled what, 56 games this week in qualifying? You don't accidentally show up on TV if you don't have game. It was a helluva bad finish for him but, really. Come on.

Side note: Somewhere today, Steve Jaros is smiling at having his TV low-score record squelched from the books.

+1  I agree he got to the show the hard way so he was deserving of being on the show. A typical mindless bowler with a silly opinion just dont understand.

You're a moron...Tom maybe an a**hole...but he's a great player.  He's got 4 regional titles and wins tourneys all over the Southeast on a regular basis.

Why? He's apparently fine with it.

"“I destroyed Jaros’ record,” Daugherty grinned. “I would have been more upset if I’d shot 260 and lost. I really wasn’t nervous. I just threw the wrong ball and made some bad shots. Once I was down 50 pins and threw another split, I was just trying to get out of Mika’s way.
“But I still had the most fun I’ve ever had in my life this week, including today. I’d rather shoot 100 today than earlier in the week. I made $500 a pin today. That’s more than Mika made, pin for pin.”

True enough. But is the PBA smiling for a 100 being posted on its return to ABC? Or the Rob Stone comment that Daugherty reminded him of his wife open bowling? I think not.

Anyone thats bowled any high level amateur stuff knows Tom Daughtery, hes a former touring pro, was on Hammer staff and is a beast in the Southeast. He can play, just had a very, very tough day.

He shouldn't feel bad. Most affiliates showed college basketball over bowling. So not nearly the viewers they expected got to watch this mismatch.

Glad they let Nelson Berton Jr sit in and watch the telecast. I think he said all of a few words during the event while Rob talked away.

Yeah, I felt bad for him too. I can only guess he had a good look in practice with that ball, and just couldn't get it where he wanted it in the match. Smallwood kinda had the same trouble. I suppose that's where the Aulby MVP ball comes in. Not as strong a cover.

Any one in the SEC likely didn't because of college basketball. Wasn't listed on ABC. Says local programing. Im sure many ABC affiliates have contracts for basketball with different schools or conferences.

Maybe we should try a brief roll call on where it was or wasn't on TV at?

The band was "Bowling for Soup". They actaully have had several hits. Not music I am familiar with, but my kids have heard of them. All I know is they are from Texas and they were debuting their new single and promoting their new album. I am sure that the PBA got some cash for them being on the show or would think so. Just promoting to a younger audience I imagine.

You know if bowling for a shot at 250K and first time on TV was not bad enough. Mika did just what he should. Jump on Tom fast. I can think of one muscle that was probably just a bit tight by the third frame..plus every other muscle in the body. I imagine we will see him again sometime.

Bottom line, you have to change balls or change lines. I didn't see that in this situation. It looked like a replay of the same shot over and over!

Just remember guys, no matter how bad you bowl in league (as long as you're over 100) you can always say: "At least I didn't pull a Daugherty."

"Like DiMaggio is to baseball, that's what Daugherty will be to bowling."

"I'd just as sure get Daugherty'ed out here in the middle of nowhere."  "You know, like be up a creek without a paddle, have the world in the palm of your hands and blow it."

:)  Just kidding....but no seriously, it will be said a lot.  $50,000 to bowl a 100 game.  I'd do it every time I had the chance.

His 100 made me feel sorry for the PBA.  Now half the house hacks in the country will be saying they could beat the PBA guys.  But then they were probably saying that anyway.

I think a 'house hack' got whacked yesterday, all this talk of we'll see him again and how good he is I decided to do some research: Tom is a talented Regional player- however 4 wins in ten years does not qualify you as a 'beast' in the region.  Speaking of regionals I have bowled in 1 and attended many, 95% are house hacks with inflated egos and pricey equipment.  You may ask how I did I averaged 190 for 8 games, missed the cut by 65 pins.  In answer to other blasts I am a Med-High rev player with average speed, how my rev rate/speed with a bowling ball compares to my knowledge of bowling I do not know.

I am willing to bet this guy disappears as fast as he appeared.

MCP,

What makes you think I want to bowl professionally?  I am too old + I have a nice job, when I could have bowled pro I had other interests.  Bowling will never be more than a distant pasttime to me, I only bowl now because my elderly father needed a another guy.  Bowling has become a Joke-even at the highest level.  The person at ABC that inked the deal for the show has probably cleaned his desk out.  When hitting a target repeatedly became a thing of the past I pretty much quit bowling.

This part made me chuckle a bit.

Seriously though, the guy bowled phenominal all week long and he will be unfairly judged on his 1 game performance on TV.  I'm sorry, but no one on this site will ever know what it's like to bowl for $250,000, so it's pretty hard to know where his head was during the telecast.  To be able to compete at all with those guys on the tour, you have to be pretty darn good so to say that he's a hack is a bit ridiculous.

He definitely deserved to be in the position he was in.  I watched him bowl on xtra frames and the guy just couldn't miss.  I was surprised that he didn't make some sort of change early in the game.  Not that it would have mattered with how Mika was bowling.

And besides, guys: Bowling is so EASY these days, right? All you have to do is think about throwing the ball and it will strike, right? Equipment has rendered the game playable by even farm animals, right?

I love to hear people talk about how "easy" the sport is and then try to justify how a guy who bowled 50-70 games in a week against the best competition and beat them all, ends up struggling on TV. If bowling is as easy as we claim it is, why, he and Mika should have both shot 299, right?

I would say bowling is easy as long as your throwing the ball good. If you leave lots of splits, get 1 pin on the second attempts and miss easy spares you will likely bowl bad. Maybe 100 bad. His day was over after the fourth frame. He still threw the wrong ball and continued to struggle. Ten frames isn't long if your lost.

I bowled on the TOC Pattern Monday Night and moving left is not a great option, taking hand out and bowling down was the better choice. So do not complain about him not moving I am sure that is why he didnt move left, He probably should have bowled down, or taken a weaker release.

Cuts if i were you I wouldn't rip him to much, I am sure he would smoke up and down the lanes any day of the week and twice on sunday, remeber he beat the best in the world just to get to that spot and made more money losing than we will see in a year.

A - Tom Daugherty is a good guy.  Now that he's married and a dad and all, he's settled a bit from his less-than-desirable days a few years ago.

B - I bowled in several tournaments with him.  He's good.  Not just "house" good, but really good.  Once he gets in a groove, he's damn-near unstoppable.

C - Criticizing a bowler that can literally mop a lane with your beaten carcass is just stupid.  I've been out there before.  I cashed in my first 2 PBA events.  It's hard work.  It's mentally grueling.  8 game blocks were tough, so 70+ games is a HELLA long time to stay focused.

You finished 65 off the cut in a PBA tournament.  That makes you 1 - a donor, and 2 - unqualified to speak about PBA tournaments.

Wow a Death threat along with an assault on my intelligence..All because I hade the temerity to say 100 on TV for ANYONE pretty much sucks.  Let me tell anyone who feels their gangbangin best Come on down to Western PA with your posse of bowlers.  I no longer bowl much mainly because I Shoot competitively with 45 ACP and M1 Garand, come and claim me, but make sure life insurance is paid because I don't miss very often.

The Dreaded Durbin is exactly right.  We're not allowed to criticize the poor performance of  a professional simply because we haven't been there or done that?  Get real.  I'll bet none of you have ever criticized Phil Mickleson or Kobe Bryant or Tom Brady because of their perfomance either.

H.O.S. (hot sports opinion)

No one should feel bad for him. He did it to himself. There is no excuse this man shot this pathetic and sorry on television. What a joke. I realize what he had to do to get on this show and is a good regional bowler but no professional should shoot under 150 no matter how bad the conditions or ball reaction is. I bet Steve Jaros is realived that the day never would come someone could suck worse then him but we got Tom throwing a thumbless ball like a hyper teenager getting splits every ball. And I thought the ball Jaros was using was a piece of junk but I don't think I can blame the ball in this day in age when all pros have 5 other + balls they could go to. Steve also was probably forced or paid to use his Prohook ball or whatever that junk was called and at least he tried different things. Jesus Christ. You'd think by only getting 50 on frame 5 you'd have a backup plan? You already lost the match by frame 3 (yes, it was over that quickly) so why not just throw the ball down the middle straight? Wow, if the PBA was a popular sport the last thing we would talk about on Monday is if Jay Cutler quit on his team and challenging his manhood. I love the fact that Mika was a smudge close to becoming the only bowler to bowl 2 300 sanctioned pba games much less the first in tournament of champion history but thanks to TOM Dough Dough makes a joke out of himself. Please quit bowling or if you don't you should get your card stripped and have to start all over again to prove yourself.

I fully understand what it took to get there and "no" I couldn't do it, but where was his ball rep or why did he not try something different. Every shot was a carbon copy of the last. When we struggle we have to try something else!

I bowled a regional ProAm stop in Lakeland I think where the pro's rotated around, so you had a different pro for each of the 3 games. The first two guys our pair got were struggling, and I beat both of them scratch.

Tom shows up, and I see him throwing no-thumb on the pair before us, knowing he was our next pro. My first thoughts were, 'great, this guy is going to be even worse', but he killed it shot after shot and put up a really good game. Best no-thumb bowler I had seen in a long time.

I was excited to see him make that show, and yeah.. it sucks he posted that score, but such is life. That 50 grand will be spent, but that 100 game will last a lifetime, lol. <3 Tom
