I think this would be really fun to watch the different styles go at it.

What exactly do you mean?  Tailored for scoring or just in general?  If they were tailored for scoring "as usual", did you watch any of the WSOB?

I think what he meant is that they were tailored to use the "freshest" part of the lane surface.  Usually they put down specific patterns for specific lane surfaces (i.e. Cheetah on old wood) in order to use the part of the lane that has the least amount of wear and tear.

The reason the scores were so high had little to do with "modifying" the pattern. The biggest factor was that the pattern holds up so much longer, since the plastic balls don't absorb oil. which means less drastic moves are needed. btw, the balls that Ziesig and Williams were throwing had a layout that was specifically tailored to maximize the differentials of the drilled ball. (guess who designed it?)
