Talks at length about Dave Ryan and Randy Pederson in the booth...I thought it was pretty good

Quote from the article referring to Randy Pedersen...
"His first full-year with ESPN came in 2001-02 after he won an audition over Marshall Holman, Brian Voss and Bryan Goebel."

Randy must have won the ESPN execs over during his auditions with his randyisms: "Mantelligence", "That's sick", "The lanes are goofy"

Don't care. Both are too irritating and spoil the show for me personally, virtually every time.

Main complaints:
- After 2 years, Ryan has learned VERY little bowling.
- Pedersen seems more interested in being "interesting" than in bowling.

"the paralyzing 5 pin"?

"60 feet to success"?

Crocidile Randy?

"childish" does not begin to describe their performance. sigh ...

My guess is that:
Voss came across as too stilted or scripted
Goebel was too flat
Holman was too technical
Pedersen was none of the above, which fit the mold ESPN was looking for

I think Randy and Dave both do a great job of getting the audience into the show.  Their enthusiasm in the way they speak goes a long way and is much easier to listen to than some dull, flat, technical stuff.  Most of the people/bowlers watching the show do not know as much technical jargon as some of us here when you think about it.  Randy and Dave both do a good job of staying enthused and not talking over the head of the person watching.  Maybe it's just me that thinks they are A-ok?

I am pretty harsh on announcers in general although they have a very difficult job to be certain.  Dave Ryan is not very good at all.  His voice is ok, but as was stated some of his sayings are just dumb.  When the real dramatic moments occur Ryan just doesn't bring it home for me.  I give him a 4 out of 10.

Randy Pedersen is an enigma to me.  To those who are new to the telecasts, Pedersen is pretty good at keeping it simple while still yet explaining what is happening and why.  My problem with him is personally.  I think the guy is a jerk and its hard to respect someone you don't like.  I give Randy a 7 out of 10.

There is no duo better than Schenkel and Burton.  They played off eachother so well.  Schenkel delivered the dead pan straightforward news while Bo filled in with the whats happening and why and was excellent at building the drama.  Even though these guys are pro's, I will never forget Burton's description of throwing a 300 on tv.

"It's down to the last ball, you just have to stop thinking and go on instinct, and hope that today is your day."

Of the backups, I like Brian Voss commentary.  Not many know the game better and he really isn't very boring.  I think Voss could do very very well as the color guy but to be honest I think him doing play by play would be fine.  The only problem would be stepping on Randy's toes in terms of explaining technical things.  Those two together and you'd have your serious yet highly qualified play by play and Randy could still go off and be goofy which is normally entertaining.  Those tandems usually play very well together in terms of commentary.

D <~~~~ Used to be terrible wiffing 10 pins.  Now through much practice, can wiff any single pin spare at any time.

I think ESPN should hire Larry Munson, voice of the
Georgia Bulldogs.  I can just hear it now, "Norm
Duke just stepped on Weber's face w/ a hob-nailed
boot w/ 3 strikes in the 10th for the 1 pin victory!!!
Oh you Norm Duke!!!!"

I have spent the last few weeks clearing off my Tivo - and watching a ton of the espn classic shows.

Although Shenckel and Burton are the true classic combo, I like Anthony, Durbin, and Holman about equally. They explain the technical stuff, but without going into tedious detail to lose the "uninitiated".

I don't like Randy and his idiotic comments - it cheapens the sport, in my opinion. And Ryan can keep his job as ping pong announcer - that way I'll NEVER have to hear him again!

I think Randy Pedersen is a pretty good analyst.  I think he would come across better if he was working with someone else who knew bowling.  All the heart warming bonding yadayadayad in that article aside, Dave Ryan is a lousy bowling announcer.  If he could manage to get through a telecast without saying "60 feet to success" or going into an Aussie accent when it's time to discuss lane conditions, it would be more tolerable--barely.  The whole telecast is so full of fluff that it slows it down too much.  I prefer the old stepladder format that gave us 4 matches to watch instead of three.

The best duo was Denny Schreiner and Mike Durbin............
