us open not contested

im just watching the recording of the us open tonight....during a list of champions there was a note that the us open was not contested in 1997 and 2002. anybody know why?

I know that they moved the tournament from summer 2002 to winter 2003. So they missed the entirety of 2002.

I do not know what happened in 1997

the bpaa( bowling proprietors of america )who sponsors the tournament said it was too expensive the run the tournament and cancelled it that year.
