just a thought...about bowling the open...
« on: March 31, 2009, 08:41:34 AM »
ok, i am sure i will get flammed for saying this and get the well you arent out there bowling and blah blah, if you really think i know nothing about bowling, then that is your choice. i know a lot, not the most and thats the best part still learning.

anyways, i want to know what the point of paying the entry fee of what 300, 400, 500 bucks is to bowl the U.S. Open or any other major event that is open to all and then average 129, 130, 140...why would you want to waste that kind of money to just say "HEY! i bowled the US OPEN" sure its cool to cross with the pros and stuff like that, but go bowl the pro-am if you want to do that...

to me it just seems like a lot of money to waste, am i jealous, absolutely! i dont have the money to fly out there and pay the entry fee otherwise i would! but my main thought is, these guys at the bottom have to know going in they dont stand a chance, why not give that money to someone they know is a good bowler who cant afford it and let them bowl...be a backer to someone so that way at least the money might have chance to be put to good use...

I dont know just my thought on it...scream and yell at me all you want...i do give these guys credit for sticking it out, but it just has to be difficult to know you are shooting 100's even 90's while there are 200's everywhere else...i mean 90?! come on...one spare...wow

Same reason some dudes pay a ton of money to participate in fantasy baseball camps with the pros...they might suck, but I bet they're having a lot of fun.

This is probably a pretty accurate statement. Then reality sets in as they implode on the lanes.

Most amatuers would be better off traveling a little south of the Open site and putting all the money for the entry fee on black in Atlantic City. Better odds.

It's the challenge of it and the competition. They don't expect to win. They do expect to compete.

I know guys who are averaging 170 and do it every year.
I know a guy who due to family committments (6 kids) can't afford the money or the time to bowl it now, but did it every year when he could. He just tried to get to 200. He LOVES bowling. It's his only free time activity.

The US Open is the most brutal bowling I have ever seen. The only thing that came close was the Petersen.

For the past two years I have gone down to Carolier, about 35 minutes from me to watch several squads. If I recall correctly, each year I posted how badly I felt for most of the bowlers there. To say, "My heart bleeds for them" is not putting it too mildly.

I'll be going down tomorrow (Wednesday) morning and afternoon to watch again. I'll probably post a few comments but I doubt it will be much different from what I said above.

I just noted that one guy who 2 weeks ago won our County Open has averaged 174 for his first 6 games.

If you have a fragile bowling ego, do not enter this tournament.

I'm not trying to flame ya but you admit that you would do it if you had the money. They do have the money so they do it. You answered your ownquestion.
Just because someone isn't a pro doesn't mean they don't want to get better. My average jumped 10 pins after I bowled in a pba experience league. It taught me something. Just like bowling around pros on one of the toughest shots out there will teach them a thing or two about pressure I'm sure.

Most people know they will not cash.  And most people don't.  Especially if you are averaging 190 - 210.  That group is in the same division as the Norm Dukes, Pete Webers, Carolyn Dorin Ballard and all the other pros that also participate in this tournament.

But pretty much the same can be said for the lower division.  You'd have to have a really really good day.  Possibly a career day of bowling.

Most people that participate work it into a vacation and its become tradition for them.  Soem of these people have been bowling in this event for over 50 years.  The bowling results is just part of the experience.  Granted its expensive, but so is a Broadway show, Vegas shows and Disneyworld.

I've only bowled it a couple times for the same reason as you.  I'm not that blessed with money and only go when its within driving distance.  I'll be making the 8 hour drive to Vegas this summer and we will meet up with relatives from TX that will be on our team.  I'm sorry that your financial budget can't fit it in.  I do know how you feel.  Its tough these days.  You'd probably enjoy it too.  Even if you don't cash.  I'm sure your savy money sense has allowed you some perks in other areas.

40? try about 80 lol but he still can throw the rock and the his first block at the open surprises me cause this is his type of tourney. When they are dirty he just lofts it 40 ft down the lane

For most bowlers, what's the difference between doing the US Open and Nationals??  I've never bowled it....but have heard many times that the expectation shouldn't be that you'll be going in and coming out with a 200+ average.

So.....why bother on either of them??
