Kent to Retire
« on: April 24, 2010, 05:45:40 AM »
Just read on Bowl.com that Doug Kent is going to give up his Tour exemption next season.  He only made $28,000 last year, really how are you suppose to live off that?  Well I'm sorry to read this Kent is one of the guys who I liked to watch. I really think he's just one of the many to follow though.

Plenty of reasons for him not to bowl though, Good luck to you Mr. Kent!

He is a co-owner of a couple bowling alleys.  He probably realized how much more money he could make if he devoted himself to that full time.  If the PBA doesn't figure out how to raise prize funds, I think they will be gone soon.

This does not surprise. Many of the players are going to be wrestling with this same decision.

When you have quality players at the top level of your sport who only make a pittance compared to other sports, what do you expect?

You can't hardly live on $28,000, and that's not even counting what he spent on hotels, equipment, and entry fees.

Doug did not bowl the full tour schedule this past year, one of the reasons he only made $28,000.

Pro golfers who finish 235th on the Pro Golf tour (literally) tip their caddies more than that. This is why the "PBA" tour is a laughing stock of the professional sports world.

It used to cost $40,000 to participate in all the tour stops, and that figure was from years ago.

Doug probably just realizes that competing for peanuts (again, literally) is just a waste of his time and effort. I'm sure he loves it but it does nothing for his family and his bottom line and takes him away from them.  I believe these could be major factors in his decision.

reighmey, you are an idiot.
I have never heard anything bad about doug and definately never a POS. By your post it looks as though you are the arrogant POS, but please accomplish something before putting down someone of Dougs ability and quality.

Definately can't blame Doug for leaving.  He owns two bowling centers that are doing well so why not devote time there.  I wouldn't be suprised to see his name on several regional rosters in the future.  With his talent he would probably make close to what he made this year with a lot less expenses.

As much as I love bowling, I can see where the pros want to leave to pursue more lucrative careers.
Would it be fair to say that averaging 210 is normal??? In today's bowlign world, that gets you nowhere.
But if you shoot even par on either golf tour--PGA or Champions Tour---you can make 12,000-13,000 a week!!!!

The golf comparison is getting old.

Yes, I know.

I only used the comparison to exaggerate the enormous gulf between the two sports. They are or seem to be to me, to be at completely opposite ends of the spectrum, as far as the way the general public views the sports. Golf is at the pinnacle and virtualy gets the most respect, while bowling is all but scraping the bottom of the barrel.

Golf is (viewed as being) played by executives and corporate players.
Bowling is (viewed as being) played by plumbers.

(And as much money as a self-employed plumber can make today, he is still regarded socially on the same social level as a bowler.)

The problem is America talks about how billions golfers make but talks about how a plumber's butt crack shows while he's working or bowling.
