Kent to Retire
« on: April 24, 2010, 05:45:40 AM »
Just read on Bowl.com that Doug Kent is going to give up his Tour exemption next season.  He only made $28,000 last year, really how are you suppose to live off that?  Well I'm sorry to read this Kent is one of the guys who I liked to watch. I really think he's just one of the many to follow though.

Plenty of reasons for him not to bowl though, Good luck to you Mr. Kent!

hey BBU, does your dad live anywhere near michigan?  I'm an unemployed journeyman plumber who is in desperate need of work.  I do great work but the companies around here espcially the one I used to work for don't want good quality work because they prefer to hire hacks who don't know what good quality work is that just butcher up a job and work for cheap. Unfortunatly its all about the almighty dollar.  Thanks Solomon plumbing!

reighmey, I bowled every WNYCT Tournament and I don't believe Doug ever DNF'D from a single one and definately not due to poor bowling. Back in the day while most were bowling more than one squads to try and qualify, Doug would only enter the last squad because he believed you should only get one shot. That is class and a respect for the game you will never have. If Doug did use your bowling ball without permission than, well I can see why you would be upset. It must have brought back bad memories of the sand box and the other boys taking your toys. Man grow up and get over it. The only thing more childish than that upsetting you that much is that more than 15 years later it still upsets you that much.

Actually, I think it's more in the 20+ years range. I used to bowl them too.

If you don't win a lot on tour or finish towards the top you are wasting your time and losing money.

The PBA has never been a place for people to go and be rich like other sports. It has always been  a sport where people struggle to get sponsors, save money and even bowl some stops. Now it has gotten worst. The market for the sport on TV has fallen off along with sponsorship.

Add the constant changes on TV trying to find a magic format to make it work, and in return has made it worst. That leaves you with what we have today. A sport that has lost it's identity and it's appeal.

It is a shame because for me the best of bowling was watching it when I was starting out in YABA back in the mid to late 90s. Every Saturday morning like clock work. The past few times I've recorded it I fast forward a little then turn it off in disappointment.

The womens show last week was by far the worst thing I have ever seen. Whomever came up with that format should be fired and give back their paychecks.

I think its sad that when you put in the years those bowlers have an the dedication that they show, they should be rewarded with alot bigger prize funds

It doesn't upset me but I brought it up because people were talking about Doug.  I have never had another bowler pick up my equipment, use it, and then tell me it was drilled wrong.  Just thought that was poor sportsmanship and showed how, in his younger days, he would whine and cry when things did not go his way.  I have not seen him in almost 20 years but something like that is remembered.  I have never said anything about his talent but his etiquite left a lasting impression.  Him and his buddies were yucking it up and rooting against me just because I did not appreciate him using my equipment.  What would you do if that happened to you?  I'm sure something would be said and you would not forget it next time his name came up.

I would have said "Oh, ok" and moved on.  I wouldn't have said I slept with his "old lady".  Seriously, that's about as original as a "your mom" joke.  Grow up and move on.

He's 43 now.  So when you last saw him he was in his early/mid 20's.  Since he was an "arrogant POS" then he's obviously the same now.

I bowled a PBA regional Pro Am in High School.  One of the pros looked at my ball and said "Who the hell drilled this?"  I told him, and that was that.  I don't even remember the guys name.

Yes. And he was rumored to be buying the center I bowled in this year. Maybe he will expand now that he's retired.

next season's payouts are ridiculously low, I wouldn't live out of a suitcase for that kind of money (or lack thereof)

"Oh, yeah, well the jerk store called and they're running out of you"

"That's ok, because you're they're best-seller"
"Oh yeah, well I had sex with your wife"

I won't miss him.  He is an arrogant, self centered, egotistical narcissist.  I bowled with him back in the day with the WNYCT - Western New York Classic Tournaments ran by David Montemerano.  A lot of the pro bowlers from OH, NY, PA started there bowling tournaments in Erie, Canadaigua, etc...  Good money from a tournament with a turn out of 120 plus bowlers.

I recall one tournament where Kent was way under and would not make the cut.  I had switched to a Columbia Gold Dot, see it was a long time ago.  Anyways kent picks up one of my balls and throws it.  No he did not ask he just threw it.  When in it came back he told me I had drilled it wrong.  Well long story short I made the cut and won the tournament with a gold dot.  I told kent the only thing I drilled wrong was his old lady because if I had drilled that one right she would have been with me.  Of course that did not go over too well.  I remember during the tournament most of us were betting on the Kentucky Derby and watching between shift.  Doug also lost money on that one.

I will give Dougie this  he has more talent than I saw back then.  Very polished game and tough as nails.  Just an arrogant POS in my book but a POS with lots of talent.

The fact that you talked like that about his wife makes you not only an idiot, but a childish idiot.  I bowled a pro am with him and he was great to bowl with.  Also talked with him for a quite a bit after and he was more than willing to hang and talk.

Your lucky he didn't knock your teeth out like chicklets.  I know I would have.
