i dont really get it, i thought on the shark, breaking outside 3 pin is proly washout, however, they all did break outside than normal
did they change the pattern itself or just it can happen?
--------------------
When a house bowler misses the mark, misses the break point and strike, for many ppl its called a wallshot. When a pro does that its call adjustment
When a house bowler gets his finger stuck in the ball and fall on the lanes, for many ppl its called lame bowler. When a pro does that its called the Machuga flop! ha i like this one.

I thought it looked a bit drier for a true Shark pattern. I know when Im on the Shark I cant cover 20 boards at 18 MPH.
-
That house makes everything hook. Topography and center characteristics overpower any oil pattern you can put down. That's a fact........and on come the nay-sayers!!
should make for a good thread

As we saw a few times, if they sent it out too far, it never recovered. However, remember that the Shark is a long pattern, but not necessarily a flood! The heads and midlane tend to get kind of dry on the Shark, especially if they decide to use a lower volume of oil that day or that tournament. Throw in high friction HPL synthetics and the TV lights to make the oil go away even quicker and things get toasty.
The line the ladies were able to play is very similar to how the Shark played for me in a PBA Experience league this summer. (Since my rev rate is pretty darn low, the ladies are actually much more representative of how I bowl.

DP3 is correct. Bowled a regional there a couple of years ago on the shark pattern. I played exactly where Wes did.

I will have to 3rd DP's analysis of Shark, having experienced both "types" of Shark. Lane surface ultimately makes the pattern play the way it plays. Try Viper or Cheetah on wood, then try it on pro anvil.....

i was never good in topography in school...now muffology i was good at..i liked playing the deep inside line and could get it to recover from anywhere..

WOW.... that's it... just WOW

That gets my vote for Post of the Day.

It would be a no-brainer post of the day if strikealot was female.

That's probably the only time you want plenty of oil in the back end

the lanes themselves, the type of lane, and the amount of wear and tear on those lanes makes all the difference in the world......regardless of the oil pattern.
-
I agree with DP3 and Greg.
My home house's league pattern plays like a 50ft pattern even though it's not!
You get about 3 boards of movement outside 8. Inside 8, you get about 3 boards or less on fresh and a bit more (or less depends on carrydown) after 2 games (2-person league). It's hopeless. (I'm hopeless!)
Would love to see some 500rpm players to try breaking down our pattern but unfortunately the standard in our house is very low.

The volume of oil could have been different from what you've seen before, too. PBA patters have 3 varieties - A, B, and C. Shark A has less volume than Shark B, and both have less oil than Shark C.
That's the way it was on the Regional tour. The National tour might have something a little different.

Two reasons. The first is they double strip which will create more backend. Second that lane surface has higher friction.
-
Not only that. But then lets add in the fact that they also get 30+ minutes to warm up on the tv pair before the telecast starts. Take into consideration again the 5 minutes between games for commercials and commentary. Before you know it, Wes has tossed probably 3 games worth up the track to create a little wall for himself. Throw in a 220 grit Cell for 20-30 minutes up 7-8 and you got yourself a little trough to throw it to. Notice how if he got the ball a little tight it held the line and if he got it out to 6-7 it wheeled the corner.

alrite, thx guys for the replies, heres what i experienced
i was bowling on a semi long oil, about... 42 feet very high volume. when i let the ball go, i feel that it moves to the right before starting hookin left. it was a really tough pattern. i was really impressed by big Wes, except the 10pin miss.

I was at the show in baltimore.. although the pros did get practice, it was not as much I thought they would get. Wes certainly didn't spend 30 minutes burning in a spot.. they just didn't get that much time. If I had to guess I would say he threw 23 to 25 shots at most. That was true for all the players all the players on the show.
-
If that number of shots BEFORE each match is true, then you're talking almost 2 games before each televised match. Then add in the shots DURING the show.To me,that adds up to plenty of time for the pattern to break down and allow some of the ball reaction that we saw that would make us think that the pattern WASN'T the true Shark pattern.

The oil pattern was "real shark". I bowled in the PTQ for that event. What you saw was a combination of a couple of factors, mainly the lane surface has a lot of friction but in talking to a couple of the touring pros, many of the patterns have been playing "drier" since the PBA tweaked the patterns in the off season. The lane charactaristics seem to show thru quicker.
I know for me, I had to use less surface starting late in the 2nd game as the ball was starting to grab in the midlane. Also, for me it was very difficult to carry the 10 pin with a ball that was tame enough to get to the pocket consistantly. That is not something that I usually have a problem with on shark.
