chris barnes won the championship game of the world tenpin masters tournament in england earning him $30,000. this tournament was held last week and showcased 16 top players from 12 different countries. since barnes has raked in $330,000 in the last three tournaments he's bowled the "barnes bashers" have been pretty quiet.........

Earl bowled against 10-15 hall of fame members in his era.  I think that he had plenty of competition.  Earl did not have the equipment that the pros have today to bowl with either.

And everyone today has to bowl against 10-15 current and future hall of famers.  WRW, PDW, Voss, Amleto, Bohn are all Hall of Fame members.  Duke, Couch, Wiseman, PA, TJ, Barnes, Smith, Mika are all Hall of Fame candidates.  Duke, Couch, Wiseman, Mika, and Barnes already qualify except for the post-retirement rule.  The others are clearly HoF caliber bowlers who, I have no doubt, will meet the requirements easily when they do finally call it quits.

And Earl had exactly the same equipment everyone else did.  He had no more advantages or disadvantages than anyone else.  Tournaments were no easier or harder to win 30 years ago.

Exactly - I was responding to Melville's statement that Earl didn't have the same amount of competition.  However, I will say that for a while, when he was able to plug thumb holes, his equipment was a little different.  After the no plugs rule went into effect, Earl had to learn how to drill his equipment to fit his game and that took him a little while.
