thoughts on 2007-2008 season
« on: December 17, 2007, 11:21:05 AM »
since the 2007-2008 pba tour has reached the halfway point and the players take a two week break for the holidays i thought i'd reflect on what we've seen thus far:

1) despite being 48 years old, walter ray williams, jr., is having the start to a career type year. he leads in just about every possible statistic( or is second ). based on how the pba calculates the player of the year, if the 2007-2008 season ended today he would be player of the year by a landslide.

2) several notable players have had off-years thus far or haven't even appeared on the radar screen. there have been some who have been injured( norm duke, tony reyes, jason couch, jeff carter ), there has been at least one who has been ill( patrick healey, jr.), and there have been others who have not had the type of success they had last year( doug kent, tommy jones, pete weber ).

3) the lefty vs. righty debate does not appear to be over as the leftys were nowhere to be found early but have been doing well as of late.

4) i enjoyed seeing the women compete and hope there will be womens professional bowling soon.

5) the pba and espn need to overhaul the time slot for the telecast and seriously think about their choice of broadcasters.

if anyone has any other topics pertaining to the tour so far let's hear them.

I want to also point out an amendment which has had MAJOR effects on this season:  PBA elligibility for Team USA.
This brings Rhino Page, David O'Sullivan and PJ Haggerty into the mix for the TQR's.  I also predict that we will see more from other Team USA members (Hoffman, Haynes, Simmons) as the tour travels.  I see this also playing a huge factor in the upcoming tour trials, and making the pressure even more intense for the many bowlers that struggle to keep their card from year to year

Also with the change of formats, from match play almost every week to having round robin and aggragate score being used more often you see the players with the highest average instead of those that are best in match play (and yes I feel that there is a difference).

several points i forgot:

1) the manner in which pba player of the year is reached----no longer do the members vote on this subject.

2) the pba world championship is now open to non-members.

3) a reduction in prize funds on the national tour.

4) an increase in membership dues and entry fees for tournaments.

these four points are the main reasons i am cancelling my membership to the pba.

1 ) The "straighties" have definitley had the upper hand so far - possibly due to lower volumes and using the older Absolute Control every other week

2 ) The energy on Tour is severly lacking right now - Guys are starting to get tired of bowling/working for lower prize funds

3 ) The end of an era - With Barb and Bill Spigner selling Hawthorn Lanes, the Tour lost arguably its best hosts

4 ) The prime time show was pretty well done but if the guys had bowled together on both lanes at the same time in rotation they wouldnt have had to skip frames

5 ) Finally we got to see a Lefty move his feet, and not just from pair to pair

6 ) I'm bored at home !!!
