Title: Liz Johnson Makes History!
Post by: greenefam on March 19, 2005, 04:39:08 AM
Kudos to Liz Johnson for being the first woman ever to make it to a PBA final!  Whether she wins or not tomorrow is immaterial.  She has shown that skill is what it is all about in this sport, not testosterone.

Good for her...but it's gonna be weird to see a woman on the telecast tomorrow.

I wonder how much press this is going to get?

Great Job by her to get this far. Amazing!!! If TJ wins tomorrow he pretty much locks up Player of the Year.

i think liz johnson will bowl against wes mallott----he's in a no win situation. if he wins it's like, "well you should beat a woman---what's the big deal?". if he loses, he'll never hear the end of it, "how could you lose to a woman ?". besides all this---congrats to liz johnson. she made it to the finals because she BOWLED better.

I really don't buy into the 'you aught to beat a woman' thought process.  Unless I'm missing something, Liz has WAY more TV experience and tour experience than Wes.  She has qualified for two different PBA Tour events as a non-exempt bowler, the first as an amateur.

The two hottest bowlers on the show tomorrow are Liz and Tommy Jones.  I fully expect it to be the two of them in the finals.  Either way it should be a great show!

This show could not be any better for me.. Liz Johnson, Big Wes, TJ and throw Jaros in the mix.. This is going to one of the best shows of the year so far!!

Mika and WRW fell which is OK with me..

I was going to offer the Rocky analogy...it seemed like every time she was on the ropes, she figured out some way to recover.

And despite the fact that big Wes is a helluva a nice guy, I'd like to see Liz win this one

Then there's that little voice in my head that says,"This is what ESPN and the PBA wants".Even though I know that Liz is one of the best there is,male or female.I've got to admit I'm pulling for her though...Reminds me of Anika Sorenstam on the PGA tour

I sure hope Liz wins it all.  It could be the biggest public relations coup that bowling has ever had.  I can just see Liz appearing on Good Morning America and getting plugs for herself and bowling on virtually every sports media show.  Sure hope the PBA's PR hacks are smart enough to be on the phones to all the major media sources to let them in on the potential for a history making event.  GO LIZ!!!!

Pulling for Jaros on this one, if he doesn't win, then someone who won 3x last year will not be exempt for 2005-2006. SAD!

It'd be nice to see Johnson vs Jaros, at least one will have a career saving tournament!

Should be a great show.  Nice variety of styles.  I'm glad Jaros finally got his act together, TJ's been throwing the ball great all year, and Liz is definitely the X-Factor (pun intended for Jeffrevs ).  I've only seen Wes on TV.  He's looked nervous and performed poorly.  Now the pressure will really be on.

It has been mentioned before here.  In the Chris Barnes Liz Johnson match ....BOTH Liz and Chris had 800s!  Chris had both a 290 AND a 300 in the match and lost!

Liz had an 822!!!  Wow!

Anyone know what equipment she is using?

Hard to say if it will carry over or not, but if Wes Malott's does not get nervous it would be tough to bet against him. He was throwing the ball extremely well. Unbelievable power there. Liz bowled great again and she may make a great match out of it.
Jaros is a great and classy guy and is really good to see him back. Jones is strong and he has bowled really well this year.
I think it is Malott and Jones in the final. Malott will fall in a close match.

I believe if she wins it is a NEGATIVE for the PBA tour and a POSITIVE for Woman's bowling.

I also believe it is an incredible feat what she has performed.

I have bowled a bit with Marsha Kamrowski and she really enjoyed beating up on the men!  Me included!

Usually I don't see woman's games as being competitive but on the right conditions!

However I salute Liz!

I don't think it will be a negative for the pba.  If she had the ladies tour to bowl on, then maybe it would be a negative.  I am cheering for Liz tomorrow.

First off congrats to liz but I have a problem with  women being allowed to enter in the first place for the simple point that the women have there own pba where men are not allowed to compete the same thing goes for golf if the ladys have there own men should be able to enter theres if they want to join the mens tour. Don't get me wrong I know that there are a lot of women that are really great bowlers but my point is on principle and just that. If the women want to compete in the mens pba the men should be able to compete in the ladys pba

This is my favorite post ever!!!!!!

Ignorance is bliss eh?

Sir, please do tell where this "lady's PBA" is. The PWBA went nipples up (T!ts is word filtered...go figure) 2 years ago. The LCT (ladies classic tour) is far from a mainstream national tour of the calibur of the PBA or the late PWBA. I know they have been trying really hard to get it up to the same level, but there have also been murmurings about its eventual demise as well. Finally, the WIBC holds 1 nationwide open even a year, the WIBC queens. That's hardly a way to make a living for someone wishing to be a professional bowler.

Joker, these women have had their livlihood ripped out from under them by the demise of the PWBA, and have been forced to "put up or shut up". I think this is an amazing testement to Liz Johnson's ability to put up.

Its amazing how many people spend vast qualtities of time posting on this forum about how they wish bowling could go back to being about skills and talent not ball choices and high revs . . . . so a bowler makes the finals through bowling well and playing a tight, error free tournament, and now some people have the nerve to complain because she is a woman. Kudos to the people who have posted to congratulate a BOWLER for playing well and making a tournament final, shame on those who are bemoaning the fact a woman has made the finals instead of a 7ft tall gorilla with a 12 ft backswing. . . .

Wrap10, with apologies, I was not aiming that comment about huge backswings at anyone on the tour in particular, especially not Mika, whom I have had the pleasure to meet and converse with many times in the past before he went out on tour. My point was, the people complaining about a woman being in the final stages and asking what effect that would have on the image of the PBA should be glad that a bowler with a pro pedigree and a huge level of experience and hard earned respect was in that position.

Congrats to Liz for her outstanding accomplishments today! Even though she finished in 2nd place (regretably due to that nasty split in the 3rd frame against TJ) Liz showed everyone in the bowling community that great bowlers come in all shapes, sizes and genders! We always knew there were good lady bowlers out there, and Liz gave all of us a chance to really see how good they can be. It's such a shame that the PWBA isn't around for these exceptional lady bowlers anymore. Liz is actually somewhat of a shy person, but always very gracious and grateful for compliments and encouragement that is sent her way. I've talked with her a few times, albeit only briefly, but her "grace under fire" is genuine!! I love to watch her bowl in local tournaments here in Western New York-she is an outstanding lady to admire!

PBA ROOKIE OF THE YEAR: Liz Johnson

I congratulate Liz for a great showing, however, I have to agree with most of jokers post. Because it has been proven that in bowling, the women can be competitive against the men, why aren't the men allowed to compete in the women's events? It just seems to me it is one sided. I'm not just talking about professional events, but abc, wibc, etc.

maybe CJ or another member can speak up...but I am guessing that the PBA is not unlike the old PWBA guidelines which stated you held rookie status until you had competed in a certain number of events.  However, there was also a minimum number of events that one had to compete in for eligibility on the award...

Since she just joined the PBA this year, she's a rookie.  (I'm not sure about # of events or time frame you get to keep that status though) Chris Barnes was a professional bowler long before he joined the PBA, and he got ROY.  I'm sure that statement could be made about several other past ROY's.  Ichiro played in Japan for several years, but he was a rookie to MLB.

Well I just saw the show. It was a good show. Congrats to Liz on her tremendous bowling, and historic day. It all went exactly how I thought it would. I think it is a good thing that a woman had made the finals, but I didnt think it would be a good thing for her to win. At least not yet...in the first attempt. It makes it better for a furute storyline, for the next time a woman makes the show.
