All I can state is WOW! 2 Games in and top 14 are over 230.
-
walled up
-
They fixed the shot to accommodate the plastic balls. If there is very little oil or no oil, plastic can move almost like a reactive.
I would like to have seen a shot like in the old videos. The balls hardly move. The crankers would be playing 15 at the arrows and not getting it past the 10. Guys would have to cut the speed down and line the ball into the pocket.

Um the shot is set up like in the old days (shorter oil, bit lighter volumes), guess we should have put all these guys in rubber balls to get what your looking for. And my guess from experience is that all the "Crankers" are still much further right of what they normally play.
-
I don't care if this is "modified" Cheetah or not. It's still not like they put up your Wally World out there. Give these guys credit for once.
-
How good do these guys have to bowl to convice you guys that they are just *THAT MUCH BETTER* than us? Why must you people be in such denial about their ability in comparison to yours.

walled lanes will out weigh any ball you throw down them.

Hence the reason your probably able to average 210-215...

Nothing hits harder than plastic. All reactives, particles and urethanes all slow down faster than plastics when they encounter friction. Plus these guys are the best in the world

I'm the dumbass but your the one saying that the PROS are only bowling that good because the lanes are "walled?" Simply amazing....
-
Ask "the pros", they would probably agree with me.

Just a reminder for those who seem to forget, PBA scores weren't that much lower during the plastic ball era. Scores fluctuated from week to week just like today, depending on the lane surface, oil, etc., but there were still higher scoring events. Look at these results (http://"http://www.pba.com/results/archives_detailed.asp?ID=490") from a tournament held 30 years ago -- it took a 231 average just to make it to the TV finals.
-
Dan Belcher is correct!
Balls don't matter if you "adjust" the oil pattern. Make em easy enough I could strike with a Titleist.
-
What pattern did they put out to get into the top 64 ??

TQR was cheetah, but they were using normal equipment so I guess it wasn't modified for plastic only.

I looked at most of the tournaments from 1979. The higher scoring tournaments took 226-230 for TV. However, there were a number of tournaments that took mid to low 210s to make TV. In those tournaments high qualifier would be 220-225. Most of the time a low 220 would be on TV.

It was modified...30ml of oil at its thickest. Pretty blended, not hard at all.

Yep, and there were some tournaments where it only took a 217 average to be the #1 seed. The point being that no matter what equipment they use, the scores are more dependent on lane conditions than anything else.
(Would anyone else not be surprised if scores dropped as the tournament went on? The patterns always play tighter and tighter as the tournament goes on, I bet we'll see less and less bounce off the gutter by Sunday)

well 4 games into the round of 64 sean rash is averaging 246, hes def not as accurate as wrw or duke but yet hes averaging 20 pins more that wrw. sounds like the old spray it right watch it hook, even with plastic its very possible

Correct me if I am wrong, but it looks like the top 10 are those who can put the REVS on the ball.
-
For the TQR it was the Cheetah.
For the plastic ball tournament it has been VERY modified.

Insert foot, because Belmo is up to 14th. Maybe wait until more than 2 games to start making comments?
-
I would really liked to know what line they are playing?
- Is anyone standing left?
- Are they all (Ones rev'ing it up) playing the same line?
It would definitely be interesting to see.

I would love to see you go try and bowl out there with them, you would probably average about 170.
--------------------
-
If scores werent that different back in the day then how come Mark Roth's average record stood for so long??? I was expecting alot different scores from this tournament. I expected a tough scoring environment and players playing tighter lines like the videos you see of bowlers in the 80's throwing urethane (not rubber like someone else said) where the shots barely moved and you had to be more accurate.

I'm ignorant? You are the one saying that because some of the guys in the tourney have a high average that they are walled up. I was wrong about my statement though. You would have to get through the TQR to make it to the plastic part, and that would never happen.

I would say it's just one round...I waited for a couple of games and expected the scores to dramaticly drop with transition.
At first I thought they were bowling at Vernon Hills, IL...the easiest bowling alley on the planet.
Now I'm starting to wonder if they are scoring better with plastic they they would with whatever ball they wanted. Besides, this is the new Cheetah and is much harder then the old pattern.
Besides the fact these guys are the best in the world which they are, it is now 100% obvious the bowlers have a huge advantage with the lane machine on tour that double strips.
Keep in mind when it comes to tv, expect the scores to be very low to medium I predict. Remember the "ultimate scoring championship" when the bowlers broke records but on tv with the people and the lights effecting the lane and the money on the line they struggled.
-
I'm interested in knowing what types of lines and angles these guys are playing this week. Obviously, the scores are much higher than any of us were predicting. We all knew going in that it was a "Modified Cheetah" pattern, but I'm not sure we were expecting "Dried Out Cheetah With Extra Bounce and Double Stripped Backends", which sounds like it may be the case (I really don't know since I'm not there to watch). If that's the case, though, then what's the point of having a plastic ball tournament?

To Z Jellsey - I don't like walls either, I prefer anything tough anyday. Walls are okay for mindless bowling, but I like challenge much better. I'd be the one voting goodbye to the existance of house shots lol.
Btw, pate08 you're slacking on response to his last one, so continue!

Most everyone played the lanes pretty direct. The majority were playing somewhere between 3 and 9. Couch and P. Allen were standing in the left gutter playing off the edge. Double D, Weber and Voss were swinging the ball just a little with softer ball speed. Dino missed a 5 pin in the 14th game which ended up costing him the cut. Most guys seemed to be using balls that had the shine knocked off to maybe 2000 abralon or so.
