For those of you that dont know.....the PBA actually made money last year. Thats the first time since the new owners took over. They have some ideas on how to profit each and every week, now we need the sponsorship side of it to take over. Sure it would be great if we were paid for our television rights instead of having to pay ourselves, but there are other ways for the tour to profit. Most importantly it starts with viewership. How many actual league bowlers watch the PBA on sundays ? How many of you that complain about everything about the PBA spends more time watching their favorite football team than the PBA ? I know that the time slot is bad for fans....but it is what it is and we have to deal with it. At this point in time, it isnt about who our sponsors are, its who our viewership is and how can that help our sport grow bigger ( and better if you want to look at it that way ). Companies set their advertising structure around a viewership base and target certain groups. For bowling right now, our viewship is based more along the "blue-collar / middle-aged" group lines. Thats why you see companies like Denny's, Lumber Liquidators, Bayer, H&R Block, etc....
If the youth of the country start to support the PBA more and our demographics start to change, then you see companies like Nintendo, Monster, and other "younger / hipper" companies jump on board. Believe me folks, the PBA is trying...so give them a break for a change. This will be the first season with a new PR and marketing team. I'm anxious to see how this affects things going forward. If enough buzz is created, the sponsors will come find us instead of us knocking on their door. In the meantime, the best thing you can do as fans is to:
1 ) Watch the shows on Sundays
2 ) Convince your family and friends to watch the shows on Sundays
3 ) Convince your local bowling centers to promote and televise the shows
4 ) Bowl PBA Experience leagues when/where possible
The PBA isnt going anywhere....there will always be a Tour in some way, shape or form. How strong it is depends on the fan base as much as the front office and players. Think about it, where would the NFL be without rabid fans ? I for one am a HUGE Steelers fan and i make every attempt to watch or at least listen to every game....we need that dedication from bowlers if we're ever to grow and succeed. My rant is over !
