What's wrong with Lumber Liquidators?

What's wrong with Lumber Liquidators?
I'm sure that they are an OK company and it's great that they are sponsoring the tour but they are not a household name. I've never heard of them outside of the tour. At least everyone has heard of Denny's and I even ate there a few times. To me, Lumber Liquidators is a big step down from Denny's.
I guess that's the biggest fish that the PBA can land.

if we are lucky jeff carter will give us an update and all the info regarding this matter.

I have actually heard of lumber liquidators, they are the nations largest wood flooring retailer. I for one had never eaten at a Denny's, happy that they have their major sponsor on board.

I guess the tour will change names every 2-3yrs now, going to the highest bidder. Maybe I'll bid next time and we'll call it "REV-O's PBA CIRCUS".

I just did a search and found a Lumber Liquidators 11.84 miles from my house. No Denny's for 25.14 miles but I would have to swim the Long Island sound to get there. PBA tour stop is about 15 miles for me.
I just researched and Lumber Liquidator web site and was pleasantly surprised. I'm in the market for some cheap laminate flooring and they have a couple at $.78 a square. Looks like I'll be paying them a visit soon. See, their PBA sponsoring is already paying off.

Cool, we have one 25.82 miles from my house. Looking for some cheap flooring also. Maybe this winter. It's a little better than Denny's I guess, LOL!! Nearest Denny's was about 10 miles. So many other/better options before it. Kids Liked their commercials though.

a sponsor is a sponsor. no matter who sponsor the PBA atleast PBA is still on TV. it can be pet food can sponsor. pet store PETSMART or something like that. why worry about it? does it have to be the well known who can sponsor. ya if tidy bowl wants to sponsor go for it hehehe.
-
Lumber Liquidators has also stepped up their advertising budget in general over the past few years. They sponsor a truck in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, for example.
-
The sponsor has been a growing company for many years. Them taking the next step for them and getting a national sponsorship is a big deal for them. Since bowling still has the image of a "blue" collar sport having a lumber company as the sponsor is a great idea. I have used them in the past for flooring while remodeling my house and they are actually a very good company. I hope they stick around for a while.
-
I don't mind Lumber Liquidators. Just going to take a while to get used to and a little longer to say. Haha. I heard a few months ago that Reebok was looking at making it the Reebok PBA Tour, looks like they gave up on it.

Maybe we should stop looking gift horses in the mouth. Let's face it no sponsor no tour. So, I say hurrah for anyone who provides any kind of sponsorship to bowling at any and all levels.
-
Wonder how long its going to be before they start bowling on surfaces put down by lumber liquidators? I mean, bowling lanes, wood flooring? C'mon guys, its a natural.
I can just hear/see it now: " Wow, Duke just laid that one down on the lumber liquidators five board", or " Wow, these lumber liquidators lanes are really dry today".

For those of you that dont know.....the PBA actually made money last year. Thats the first time since the new owners took over. They have some ideas on how to profit each and every week, now we need the sponsorship side of it to take over. Sure it would be great if we were paid for our television rights instead of having to pay ourselves, but there are other ways for the tour to profit. Most importantly it starts with viewership. How many actual league bowlers watch the PBA on sundays ? How many of you that complain about everything about the PBA spends more time watching their favorite football team than the PBA ? I know that the time slot is bad for fans....but it is what it is and we have to deal with it. At this point in time, it isnt about who our sponsors are, its who our viewership is and how can that help our sport grow bigger ( and better if you want to look at it that way ). Companies set their advertising structure around a viewership base and target certain groups. For bowling right now, our viewship is based more along the "blue-collar / middle-aged" group lines. Thats why you see companies like Denny's, Lumber Liquidators, Bayer, H&R Block, etc....
If the youth of the country start to support the PBA more and our demographics start to change, then you see companies like Nintendo, Monster, and other "younger / hipper" companies jump on board. Believe me folks, the PBA is trying...so give them a break for a change. This will be the first season with a new PR and marketing team. I'm anxious to see how this affects things going forward. If enough buzz is created, the sponsors will come find us instead of us knocking on their door. In the meantime, the best thing you can do as fans is to:
1 ) Watch the shows on Sundays
2 ) Convince your family and friends to watch the shows on Sundays
3 ) Convince your local bowling centers to promote and televise the shows
4 ) Bowl PBA Experience leagues when/where possible
The PBA isnt going anywhere....there will always be a Tour in some way, shape or form. How strong it is depends on the fan base as much as the front office and players. Think about it, where would the NFL be without rabid fans ? I for one am a HUGE Steelers fan and i make every attempt to watch or at least listen to every game....we need that dedication from bowlers if we're ever to grow and succeed. My rant is over !

Great Post Jeff. Thanks for explaining how things are going and how they are done. Like you said the best way we can support the tour is by watching every Sunday and by word of mouth. Good Luck this year.

I just stopped by the one and only Lumber Liquidator store on the island and I have to say that they did have a large selection of laminates and hardwoods on display. The clerk was pleasant and helpful. Best of all was the price on some closeout laminate flooring. I figured that I can do a 200 sq ft room for $203 with a vapor barrier and softstep underlayment. Trim would be about another $20. Way better that the Home Depot or Lowe's had to offer.

Great post Jeff.
It's not like Denny's is gone. They will still sponsor a tour stop and other events from what I have been told. Denny's is cutting back on there marketing to accommodate for there losses due to the economy.
Lumber Liquidators is a big, sturdy company with some capital to spend (rare in todays economy). I am glad they want to spend it on bowling.

One thing that i forgot to mention...that is a huge item, is the fact that Denny's went through a change in their front office. The new people had a different outlook on their marketing focus. Keep in mind that when the new people took over Anheiser Busch, they cut out their racing budget and dropped Kasey Kahne as of next season. Now thats rough !!! They went from having one of the biggest prescences in NASCAR to nothing....all because of a difference in philosophy. So it really wasnt that Denny's was bailing on the PBA's "sinking ship"...it was more of a change in philosophy by th higher ups

Jeff great post, thanks for the explanation. It is a good thing the Chiefs are so bad this year I can DVR them and watch the PBA live. I know alot of people are kind of up in the air over the format this year but it has produced alot of conversation.

Thanks for the info Jeff....but no matter what you say, some people aren't going to be happy unless they've got something to complain about.
When the tour starts...it'll be that such and such was shut out this week...or that Walter Ray is already on too many times....or whatever.
Appreciate it for what it is....and that we've got something to watch. I tape it every week as I'm not always around the TV.....but if it's football or bowling....I'm in my room watching the bowling while everyone else is in the main room watching football. That's just how it works in my house. Same for my kiddo!! He's with me.

Thanks for providing another perspective on the situation that should hopefully calm down the raving masses. It's hard for a lot of people to truly understand the business side of professional sports, so I get the frustration, but you sometimes have to step back and look at it from another angle.
Oh, and

Are you as worried about their o-line as some people? I mean, yeah, the Eagles just stomped all over them, but in my opinion that was more the Eagles defense is just really solid with a smart defensive coordinator, plus you always have those anomoly games where nothing seems to go right. I still think the Steelers have a great shot of doing well this season if Roethlisberger stays somewhat healthy.
-
jeff hit it right on the head when he mentioned actually watching the telecasts. i'm constantly amazed by serious league and tournament bowlers who don't watch the telecasts. i know competing with the nfl is almost hopeless-----but that's what electronic recording devices were invented for.
-
Question maybe Jeff or others can can explain. I see the European Tournaments with Gambling sites promoting. Does it make sense here in the states? I had heard rumor that a few sites had made inquiries a few years ago but were refused. I'm all for them and even betting on them. I can tell you it is making tennis more watched as betting on matches especially in europe is getting quite a following.
-
Thats a good question and i'll speculate to say that the PBA still has to be very cautious as to who they align themselves with as far as sponsors go. Bowling has had a hard enough time shaking the "beer bellied, smoker" image....so aligning with a Gambling site may not be in their best interest right now. I can tell you that Winnercom, the marketing firm for the PBA, does contact numerous sponsors and there are numerous sponsors that contact the Winnercom about the PBA...unfortunatley right now, the numbers just dont add up to a lot of sponsorship dollars. The immediate future needs the sport to support itself for the time being, then hopefully we can move forward and grow

Jeff, you had me all the way up until you said you were a Steelers fan (lifelong, die-hard Patriots fan here).

I, for one, am very excited to see this 50th anniversary season of the PBA, and the new title sponsor Lumber Liquidators. Jeff, I hope to see you out in Vegas at the Masters. Good luck this season!

Mr Jeff Carter,
Thank you for laying it on the line. Also, thank you for doing so in the past. I think that Lumber Liquidators is a great sponsor. Up and coming. Plus they have been a sponsor for the last few years anyway (all the Lumber Liquidators placards on both sides on the lanes).
I am really glad the PBA Tour made some money. I watch them every week (or record to view later that day). I also talk to people that I know have at least a casual interest in bowling about what is going on.
I think taping and showing on ESPN in the off season is a good tactic. Like the PBA Six Flag Summer Series. My son and I went last year to Six Flags Over MidAmerica (St. Louis) and we had a blast. Lots of access to the bowlers and it was a great event. We talked to some of the bowlers and everybody had a good time.
This year was up near Chicago and I think it was another hit. New format and trying something different worked for me (and I hope others). I certainly enjoyed watching it on ESPN.
Right now, I am saying did you watch the US Women's Open yesterday? Yes, it is taped, but it is still great hearing Bo Burton and Marshall Holman announce this event. Not to mention the other bowling pros that they have on the show. Outstanding.
And having the Bowling Clash on CBS, which has been renewed for this year and is a big avenue to open up viewership.
What is my stake in this? I bowled for quite a few years in youth leagues as a kid (1970s). I really enjoyed it. I quit bowling in 1980s. I still liked it, but other things came up.
Casually bowled through the 1990s and early 2000s whenever friends suggested it. No leagues, just Saturday nights out with friends. No problem.
My son started bowling in the Saturday Morning Youth League in 2003. I haven't joined a sanctioned league, but he and I have bowled the Parent/Child league every summer since then. He also has bowled in a YABA/USBC sanctioned league every year after that.
He gets new shoes as needed, a new ball as needed (usually every couple years). No problem here. The future of bowling is definitely in the kids. But, and this is a big but, bowling is a sport for every age group. Parents, kids, grandparents, everyone. Sorry to sound like a cheerleader, but I really believe that.
Come on people, let's bowl!

Guys,
Thank you very much for the feedback. I actually work for Winnercomm and I'm in charge of bringing on new sponsors. I can tell you that Lumber has been involved in sports for years and is a very solid company that is only getting stronger. They are committed to the sport of bowling and have stepped up their sponsorship level each year. In this tough economy good sponsors are not easy to come by but Lumber happens to be a great one. Denny's is also my client and Jeff was correct when he mentioned their change in management as being a major reason for the change. It had nothing to do with the strength of the PBA.
I will check back periodically to answer any questions I can but please be assured that Lumber is really a great sponsor. So please visit your local Lumber Liquidators if you're in the market for hard wood flooring and tell them it's because they sponsor the PBA. This way we won't need to find a new title in the upcoming years.

How many of you that complain about everything about the PBA spends more time watching their favorite football team than the PBA ?
I will admit I'm guilty of this, but only because the PBA telecasts are 1.5 hours long versus a 3 hour long football game. Make the PBA telecast 4 hours long and I'll watch (and rewatch) all 4 hours of it. Then I'll be guilty of watching bowling more than my favorite football team.
As an avid supporter of the PBA and its sponsors, my only concern with the change from Denny's to Lumber Liquidators is my personal patronage. It was easy to write a letter to Denny's thanking them for sponsoring the tour and informing them that one of the reasons I eat at Denny's is because of their sponsorship of the tour. It is not often that I'm in the market for new hardwood floors or other lumber needs. While I can write a letter to LL and thank them for their sponsorship of the tour, I can only promise to shop there if ever I have a need for their products.

That is all they ask. Be aware of there sponsorship and give them a look if you're in the market for wood flooring. A letter never hurts either. Thank you for the support.
